Zod's OFFICIAL first overall pick selection is....

Zod

I think he is is the best player at his position.I would be happy with he or Darius but Peterson has the opporunity to make game changing plays with his return ability and the ability to make big plays on defense.

I have come to the conclusion this is not the year to pick a qb with the first pick. There may be a franchise qb in the draft but I cannot determine who that is.

Peterson would be a great pick. Also, despite how good he may look as a rookie he won't unseat Chris Gamble unless he is absolutely phenomenal. It should give us a pretty stout secondary.

Stout secondary=poo if you can't get pressure on the QB.

CB is the last position you fill when building a defense. Just as WR is the last piece you put in when building an offense. Look at the last 5 drafts, of the CBs taken in the top of the first round.

2006 - Tye Hill

2007 - Darrelle Revis

2008 - Leodis McKelvin

2009 - Malcolm Jenkins

2010 - Joe Haden

The only one on that list that made a significant impact on his team, as a rookie, was Jenkins. Why? Because the Saints had already filled out the rest of their defense before drafting him.

You can even look at last year's draft alone. Joe Haden had a very negligible impact last year. The CB taken after him, Devin McCourty, went too the Pro Bowl. The difference, the Pats already had 10 other pieces in place on D.

Greg Hardy and E. Brown will have another year under their belts. Our defense is going to be more aggressive. That means we should see a fair amount of TD, JA, even Norwood. We should still be able to nab a good DT with one of our 3rd's. We could probably make a move to get in the 2nd round. There are a few guy in FA I'd like us to nab as well. I'm with you though that we need a DT who can take double teams and penetrate.

I'd either go with PP7 or Dareus.

So who do we take a DT?

The whole not taking a CB #1 is a weak argument. If Peterson is the BPA, take him. Peterson is the most highly touted Corner to come out in a While. He is a Freak at his position, similar to Peppers at DE Calvin Johnson at WR etc. Our division is FULL of big QB WR Combo's

ATL- Ryan-White

NO-Brees-Colston

TB-Freeman-Williams

A guy like Peterson who can Blanket those top WR does a Lot for a D. These QB's will have to check down to other WR's who we will have Gamble and captain munnerlyn on. With a Pass rush coming at them it will make it tough.

And yes we will have a pass rush even without drafting a top DL. Resigning CJ beside of Hardy plus the new DC is a HEAVY Blitz guy.

Go even farther back than 06

Since 2002 here are the DT's that have gone top 10

2002- John Henderson (9th), Ryan Sims (6th)

2003- Jonathon Sullivan (6th)

2004- none

2005- none

2006- none

2007- Amobi Okoye (10th)

2008- Glenn Dorsey (5th), Sedrick Ellis (7th)

2009- B.J. Raji (9th)

2010- Suh (2nd), Gerald McCoy (3rd)

Not many of these guys made a rookie impact either.

2010 in 2 games vs Panthers

Roddy White - 14 rec 141 yds 1 TD

Marques Colston - 12 rec 101 yds 0 TD

Mike Williams - 6 rec 122 yds 1 TD

Doesn't look like they were exactly lighting us up.

At this point, Peterson is a liability in zone coverage, which is what we will be running the majority of the time.

If your DTs can't even beat a man one on one, let alone take up a double team, then your blitzes aren't going to make it home.

I'll give you that Sims, Sullivan and Raji didn't have a big impact their rookie years, but...

John Henderson - 13 GS 53 tkls 6.5 sacks

Amobi Akoye - 14 GS 32 tkls 5.5 sacks

Glenn Dorsey - 16 GS 46 tkls 1 sack

Sedrick Ellis - 13 GS 30 tkls 4 sacks

Ndamkong Suh - 16 GS 66 tkls 10 sacks

Gerald MccCoy - 13 GS 28 tkls 3 sacks
