I don't understand why the "no onez eva drafted CB #1" argument holds any weight. Who cares. If they don't throw to his side if the field, that doesn't mean he's not making an impact! That means he's doing his job better than we expected. Jeebus people. Doing a make-believe draft fantasy redux I must ask: place a rookie Dieon Sanders in this draft. Would you honestly take Darreus or Fairley before PrimeTime based on their positions?!

That's a strawman from hell.

Why?

Because we don't know how good or bad in the NFL Fairley or Dareus will be. Dieon Sanders is a Hall of Famer.

Now... you want to make this a logical argument, ask this:

Place a rookie Dieon Sanders in the 1998 draft. Would you honestly take Peyton Manning before Dieon Sanders?

The question should be a hell of a lot easier to answer.... fug yes you would take Peyton Manning!

Why?

Because the QB DOES have a tremendous more impact on the outcome of a game than a single CB.

Why?

Because the QB touches the ball on 99% of all offensive plays (the %1 being the rare trick play or wildcat).

AND

Because successful offenses have a mix of running and throwing.

AND

Because with a handful of rare exceptions, winning teams have QBs with good to great accuracy, vision, and arm strength.

Running Backs can go first if the #1 team has a solid QB already. O-linemen, D-Linemen, and Line Backers usually go #1 to teams that are rebuilding from the ground up.

In fact, in the past 16 years, only one time has a receiver gone (Keyshawn Johnson to the Jets) #1 overall. This was a Bill Parcels move, that gave the Jets a boost, but never got them into the Super Bowl. Really, in hindsight, for the needs of their club at the time, that was probably a stupid pick.

Actually, looking through all the drafts, in the past 16 years, Quarterback has been the position picked #1 the most.

So it's really that simple why you don't go with a Corner a Safety, or a Kicker. They are easy to game plan around. They are easy to account for. They often aren't touching the ball, and their influence in the outcome of games is limited. (Yes, it can be big, but still limited).

You don't draft a QB number 1 unless you know for a fact that he will a franchise QB in my opinion. Gabbert and Newton have to many question marks. What is Rivera's strength? Defense. Lets build the defensive side of the ball and take it from there. Draft Petersen number 1 and then try to trade up or take a DT with the third round pick. You then re-sign Anderson, Davis, Johnson, and extend Beason your looking at a defense of:

DE: Charles Johnson

DT: Brandon Mebane/Barry Coefield

DT: Draft Pick

DE: Greg Hardy

SLB: James Anderson

MLB: Jon Beason

WLB: Thomas Davis

CB: Chris Gamble

SS: Charles Gofdrey

FS: Sherrod Martin

CB: Patrick Petersen

Thats a pretty good defense. Just wait a year to upgrade the SS and replace Godfrey and were looking young and good. Plus we have rotational players like Brown, Landri, Munnerlyn, Connor, and Pugh. That defense gets me excited.

So Beason has come out and said he would like us to take Newton with our first pick. Thinks he has the it factor. He could have said Fairley or Peterson instead.

So if your defensive leader would rather you pick Newton versus Peterson, you have to ask what does he know that people not on the team not know. Maybe that fixing the offense is more important that getting a playmaker on defense like Fairley or Peterson.

But lets ignore him since posters here know more about the football and the team than our all-pro linebacker. Instead lets listen to Justin Tuck. LOL.

Deion Sanders is how it is spelt. Honestly, please tell me your kidding if you think Cam Newton is Peyton Manning...

Who knows down the road. At the time there was a big debate between Manning and Leaf. Manning proved to be the real deal but at the time he was just a rookie in college with potential. He was more polished than Newton is but in four or five years, who knows who will be further along. What makes Manning great is his drive and desire for perfection More than his great athleticism. Our personal interviews are there to see if he Cam is more pretender or potential franchise guy.
