Zod's OFFICIAL first overall pick selection is....

Zod

Peterson makes the most sense, but few would agree with me when I say Quinn or Bowers--I think they really like Quinn--is my second choice. Effective pass rushing DEs are hard to find. On average, 1 or 2 really great ones (Peppers, Williams) come out each year. DT is deep in this draft, so you count on one dropping in the third.

That is based on the assumption that the QB problems have to be addressed in the draft, in the first round. I understand your frustration. And maybe they like Cam or Blaine, but the D needs some studs too. There are great WRs and QBs in our conference who must be stopped. Ideally, trade down.

My Board after trading down about 4-8 spots and accumulating picks:

Peterson

Quinn

Dareus

Bowers

Fairley

Newton

Gabbert

Green

I would not trade lower than Tennessee at #8. At least one falls. That is the benefit of having multiple needs. Considering Von Miller is going top 6 probably, you would likely get your choice between two of these players. By dropping to #7 or #8, you would get a second rounder and probably a third rounder minimally for a player you might have chosen first overall anyway. More picks, lower salary Win Win.

This team has a lot of holes for sure but by far the biggest one is under center. Michael Lombardi wrote a great article on this the other day http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81ea5385/article/panthers-would-be-wise-to-address-biggest-hole-with-gabbert

I think we need to take Cam/Gabbert.

Patrick Peterson

Peterson is the closest thing to a sure thing future pro bowler in this draft. He would step in day one as a starter and improve this team a great deal on both defense and special teams as a returner. Patrick Peterson on Roddy White twice a year? Yes please.

Saw him being interviewed by Cowherd--Very impressive young man.

We won't pick up Peterson for 3 reasons:

If we go defense rather than offense then the opposing team will score 20 points a game instead of 24 like last year. Since our offense will improve to 14 points a game we will still lose a bunch of games.

CB has never been the first pick for a good reason- too easy to take out of the game.

And finally, Richardson said that Rivera's charge is to fix the offense not the defense. With McDermott and Rivera running the show they already will be better than last year on defense. The defense suffered last year because the offense was so bad. Richardson is running the show. They only go defense if Newton and Gabbert have terrible personal workouts with the Panthers. Even then it will be Bowers or Fairley.

Peterson is a great pick-up for someone else but not for us.

I see the need, but Newton is one way of addressing that need. I feel that Clausen will improve a lot. So many reasons he played poorly. Watch some film on him from ND-his problems were mental. If he had stayed in school (don't forget he was 21) Clausen would be the #1 QB in this draft.

I am just not ready to dump him yet. Instead of buying a car and trading it in a year later because the weather was bad and it underperformed, lets give it another year in better conditions and a better mechanic and navigator. I mean, many great QBs sucked in year one. Bring in a veteran, but Moore, Clausen, and even Pike need a fair chance. We did not draft chopped liver last season. Ironically, everyone who is saying draft Newton is also saying, "he needs a year or two to develop." I suppose Clausen did not.

If Cam can overcome character concerns, mechanical issues, and cognitive challenges that stiffle the smartest of QBs, then he will be great. However, all three is a lot to ask a kid.

Sign a veteran who can lead our young offense. Let it mature a bit and see what you have in Moore, Clausen and Pike.

Many hall of fame QBs were terrible in year one. I respect your opinion, but I just don't see the accuracy in Newton, 52% completion rate when the chips were on the line against no defense, no wind, and involving no reads? I wish everyone knew how these workouts are Newton's brightest moments. They eliminate areas in which we have concerns. He had the chance to showcase his ability. This was his best.
