People on here criticize us "Huggers" for talking about Cam as a winner saying "It means nothing." EVERY great QB in the NFL right now won at a high level in college.

There are only 2 QBs of any significance that didn't win a bunch of games in college. Cutler and Josh Freeman. Everyone else was a BIG time winner.

If this were truly based on how good someone is now and how ready they are for the NFL, this would be similar to the order in which they would be selected--in the second round.

Two months ago, there were arguably no QBs worth a first round grade. I recently read as many as 6 could go in the first round. That is nearly 20% of the picks. Gabbert, Newton, Locker, Mallett, Kaepernick, Ponder, and I think Dalton, going from memory. I guess they are like gas prices--inflated prices but you have to pay it sooner or later.

Sorta like I said in an earlier post somewhere, you are almost always drafting a QB ahead of their perceived draft value.

Kaepernick, Ponder, and Dalton will not sniff the first round. And I think Mallett gets selected before Locker and Locker slides to Seattle or to the second. That is my prediction.

There is something to be said about a guy who came out of nowhere, basically, and put an SEC offense on his back and carried them to a national championship. Cam may have his flaws, and nobody is arguing that he doesn't, but it's crystal clear that his teammates trusted him and would play their asses off for him every week. To me, that's more important than whether your QB has perfect footwork or a perfect understanding of NFL defenses. Those things can and will be improved upon with good coaching and lots of study and practice, but if the guy's teammates don't believe in him, then he will not succeed.

"Draft value" is irrelevant in our case unless we can get someone to trade down with, especially considering we don't pick again until the 3rd round. And at that point, what does drafting a Kaepernick or Mallett, assuming they're there in the 3rd, do for this team?

If you stick with the pick you have and don't get a QB #1 overall, you must then be willing to say Clausen is your starter going into next season barring we pick up a vet in free agency, and there just aren't any really good options there either.

I am scared to death of going through another season with Clausen at the helm, so to me, either Newton or Gabbert would be an instantaneous upgrade at that position, even if most people have them in the 3-7 slots.

Same here. And if a QB is good enough to go 7th, then he is good enough to go #1, because you're expecting that guy to be a franchise QB either way.

Wasn't Locker the Andrew Luck last year? Can't miss prospect/Number one draft pick, etc. that apparently broke a few hearts when he decided to finish his degree?

Not even close. Last season was just a weak QB class and with Sam Bradford injured Locker could have been a top pick.

Luck on the other hand is about as perfect as you can get as an NFL quarterback prospect. He could literally sit out the entire season next year and would still be the #1 overall pick.

If we draft Newton #1 overall, Clausen will not be starting.

I don't think Clausen is mentally strong enough to handle it, if the Panthers draft a QB 1st overall. They will probably either have to cut him or try to trade him. Good luck getting anything for him though.
