top ten stupid reasons some panther fans don't want us to draft cam newton

#10 Reason: He stole from teammates' lockers at Florida

#9 Reason: He had a stolen laptop

#8 Reason: He threw it away AFTER police took the serial number

#7 Reason: He was accused of cheating at UF 4 times

#6 Reason: We should not have to pay someone up to $50 million to see if they can read defenses

#5 Reason: NCAA investigation still on-going concerning severe violations

#4 Reason: 11 for 21 (52%) completion rate at Indy with no wind, no rush, no coverage.

#3 Reason: 50 for 60 at his own pro day. Timing was a little off, and he rehearsed.

#2 Reason: Running QBs don't last long in NFL. He will resort to running. Take his runs out of his highlight videos and see what you have left--above average, no more.

#1 Reason: All of the previos factors make giving this guy up to $50 million and the keys to the car a tremendous risk that is seen by people with average to high levels of intelligence.

Yes he has upside, we get it. But when risk outweighs reward, don't take the risk. Sorry for the fact that others' opinions do not agree with yours. Focus on what you want and not what others want, but respect the fact the we were all given indvidual brains and are entitled to an opinion. We see your points and have known them for some time. You choose to ignore the red flags and how these concerns have forshadowed problems and are not precursers to the Pro Bowl.

There is upside, we get it. But there are huge risks concerning character, mechanics, and football intelligence. The fact that you have not interviewed him, looked into his background, or seen him break down a defense and still want him tells me a lot.

But he's big and strong and the Panthers sure need a QB. Also no risk, no reward. Etc. ad nauseum.

I don't care if that impact is on defense. Fairley or insert defensive player here can have 60 sacks and we'd still be in the same position next year. Whats so hard about seeing that defense wasn't the problem last year. We don't have to take cam but it's insane to draft a defensive player and hope the leagues worst offense will improve.

While i am not a fan of gabbert,i have become more open to drafting him or green, and maybe pat petterson. I only include petterson because he can help put points on the board in the kick return game. The more i look at the situation the more impossible it looks to take a defensive player if your ron rivera and want to keep your job past year 2.

Its a awful year to have the number 1 pick, but when given lemons you have to make lemonade:rolleyes:

Which offensive player do you suggest we take that isn't a reach? Green? We don't have room for another Wr if Steve stays. Lafell and Gettis both showed a lot of promise last year. PP7 is imo the best player in this draft he is who I want us to draft. If we go DT which is also a huge need on this team and has been for quite some time I'd like to think we'd take Dareus. And you're right our offense was the worst in the league but it wasn't all of Clausens fault. Every one is so quick to blame the qb but doesn't realize how god awful our OC was. Our oline was absolutely pathetic on the right side because Otah was injured the entire season. I want to give Clausen another chance to improve rather than pulling the plug after one season in which our coaching staff was horrible. Give the kid a fresh start. Bring in someone from FA if they are that worried that Clausen is going to fail but do not reach with the #1 pick especially since Cams red flags are still there even after his pro day workout. I don't even want us to take Gabbert and I think he's a better prospect than Newton is. Now if we trade down and one of them are available then by all means but we cannot afford to waste this pick with no 2nd rounder this year.

It is so obvious he is going to be a bust that as many as 4-5 teams might want to trade up for him right??

It is amazing how much smarter us here at the Huddle are than NFL front offices.

They don't even need a war room or scouting department. Just sign up and sign in here. Save them some money.

So what makes your opinion right? Do you work for the Panthers organization? Didn't think so. All we have are examples from the past. And everything points to Cam will not be a franchise qb. And how do you no 4-5 teams want to trade up to get him? Do you work for their football teams as well? Do you have ANY proof at all besides a couple of teams scheduling private workouts and taking him out to dinner? Yea didn't think so.

I didn't offer an opinion in that quote. I was commenting on someone else's opinion. The only opinion that I have had ios that he can be a franchise QB and the Panthers should decide if they like him. If they do, then take him. Thanks though

If the Panthers decide to take Cam then so be it. Hurney hasn't missed in the first round. I just don't see it happening.

You may very well be right. I just want them to give him a hard look and it appears they are doing that. After that I will defer to their judgment.

#10 Reason: He stole from teammates' lockers at Florida

Wow. This is a new one. More rumor no doubt.

#9 Reason: He had a stolen laptop

Lets see... he was a young kid hanging with a bad influence who actually DID steal the laptop. And he was never convicted of anything related to this.

Again, innocent until PROVEN guilty is how we are supposed to operate. And even at that, using minor mistakes in youth as a measuring stick, there are TONS of great NFL players who wouldn't have made it in the NFL. Hell, there are NFL players who are convicted felons.

Fortunately, the NFL doesn't care what a small group of close minded people's views are on subjective morality towards punishment of minor issues.

#8 Reason: He threw it away AFTER police took the serial number

Again, young kid, never been in SERIOUS (meaning felony) trouble. Had his whole future flash before him, and he made a poor judgement call.

How many times have any of us, NFL players included, turned left when we should have turned right?

#7 Reason: He was accused of cheating at UF 4 times

Accused... aka... rumor. There is no evidence for this at all.

So almost HALF of your top ten is either unsubstantiated rumor or has no impact on him as a NFL player.

These "Character Issues" have been brought to light by media outlets associated with rival SEC schools since Auburn became the #1 BCS team. It stinks of politics, and perhaps something deeper.

Again, none of this has any impact on his ability to perform in the NFL, or his work ethic as a player or a leader on the field.

#6 Reason: We should not have to pay someone up to $50 million to see if they can read defenses

#1. The Union and League have already agreed that any future CBA WILL have a Rookie wage scale. The dollar amount you are quoting is invalid.

#2. Indy's people said he was "Perfect" in reading defenses and making reads, so this whole point is moot. Anyone who says he was a "one read" QB is uneducated, and ignorant to how he played last year at Auburn.

#5 Reason: NCAA investigation still on-going concerning severe violations

Even if it is proven that there was a pay-for-play scheme HE was involved in, it has NOTHING to do with his future as an NFL player.

And to that point, there is no current "evidence" supporting any allegations, except, a Radio Host for an SEC rival claiming he has some, but has yet to release it.

Case in point: Reggie Bush. His Super Bowl ring is his for life.

#4 Reason: 11 for 21 (52%) completion rate at Indy with no wind, no rush, no coverage.

Many top QBs have had poor completion rates at combines and gone on to be monsters in real play.

And to that point, his majority of problems was with "out" routes. He said himself that timing was a problem, and he'll work on it.

He had near-record setting passing, including completion percentages at Auburn, to receivers that aren't elite by any stretch. The kid CAN make accurate throws.

#3 Reason: 50 for 60 at his own pro day. Timing was a little off, and he rehearsed.

See above. Same routes were giving him problems. It may just take more than a couple weeks of practice to get down.

#2 Reason: Running QBs don't last long in NFL. He will resort to running. Take his runs out of his highlight videos and see what you have left--above average, no more.

He is not a running QB. You're stereo typing him by completely ignoring what he did in the passing game at Auburn.

He's a dual-threat QB.

#1 Reason: All of the previos factors make giving this guy up to $50 million and the keys to the car a tremendous risk that is seen by people with average to high levels of intelligence.

Ignoring facts, or inserting irrelevancies doesn't make you "intelligent". It makes you biased.

With a rookie wage scale coming FOR SURE, and a the worst QB play in the history of our franchise last year, anyone with any "intelligence" is going to see the upside Newton has and jump at the chance to see what he can do.

When you don't LIKE someone, facts are irrelevant. So far, the BIGGEST factor in people not wanting Cam is emotional.... not factual.

If you guys would just man up and say "I don't like him." instead of trying to play the "I'm a football genius and say it is so." card, when the real FACTS don't agree with what you're sating, the Cam-Supporters could respect your issues with him a little more.

There is upside, we get it. But there are huge risks concerning character, mechanics, and football intelligence.

No. There isn't. And I've pretty much shot down ALL your points in your vain effort to prove there is.

The fact that you have not interviewed him, looked into his background, or seen him break down a defense and still want him tells me a lot.

And neither have you.

But I can safely say Rivera and Hurney have started the vetting process, and with that, Cam's been invited to come workout with the team privately and has a private meeting scheduled.

Fortunately, our GM and HC are looking at this more intelligently, and less emotionally than our Cam-Hate-Club posters on this board.

You have to remember, you can list as many rebuttles as you want. You can not ignore that he has had issues arise off the field. You also have to worry about his mechanics, and ability to transition to the NFL. And if I am paying someone millions of dollars, expect ed to be a leader, and role model all of those issues come into play and are factored in. I'm not saying he didn't prove his playing ability on a college level, he is a heck of an athlete.

and you can list any number of questions/concerns, most other QBs that have become outstanding pros have had question marks at the same point that Cam is in right now. Nobody's a finished product before they're drafted. Peyton wasn't, Luck won't be, neither is Cam. But they do much of their improving as a pro.

As to the stealing from lockers, this is an extension of the laptop thing. It is not a case of him taking watches, or money, or twinkies from the lockers of teammates at Florida. The unsubstantiated reports are that the stolen laptop came from another student's locker.

Yes, he had a stolen laptop in his room that he tossed out the window. Apparently the police think he bought it "hot" rather than lifting it himself. It doesn't matter; it was stupid and immature but most people can understand doing something idiotic in their youth.

The cheating is totally unsubstantiated, but even if you choose to believe the rumors, it was 2 instances, not 4.

People make mistakes. Its how you man up to them that defines you as a person.

People that don't want Cam can see that he's going to be a bust or take awhile for him to be an impact player that's why we dont want to draft him. Would rather have a player that can come in and make the team better right away. Yes I'm talking about going BPA with the #1 pick instead of wasting it on a project player.

this.
