I think we should keep Ken Lucas...

The problem is if we cut him because his hit is higher then his actual Salary we wouldn't be saving much on the current season. Most of his money would be due this season since its already on the books. He's already getting paid over 4 million in just bonuses this coming season. we would have to restructure him for us to save the most money and let him compete for the spot in camp.

Marshall will be an UFA after next season and his chances of walking away increase a lot if Lucas is extended. The FO has to think beyond 2009 with this group. Plus there are some decent CB's that can be had in the 2nd and 3rd round of the draft this year. Food for thought.

Restructuring Lucas alone won't save much money. When you restructure you essentially give him some of his salary due this year as guaranteed money which then is considered like a signing bonus and can be prorated over the remainder of his contract. Since he is signed only through 2010 you would only be able to prorate for another year and you have to be aware of the 30% rule. Salaries can only increase by a maximum of 30% from a capped year to an uncapped year.

He is due to count 9.1 million against the cap in 2009 and 9.5 against the cap in 2010. He has a salary of 5.4 million in 2009 and a 6 million dollar salary in 2010. For 2009 he has an additional bonus and cap hit of 3.7 million. The 3.7 million you can't do anything with and still keep him. You can pay part of the 5.4 million salary as a bonus and split it over 2009 and 2010. Still you will be adding to the 9.5 due in 2010 so it would be a 1 year fix at best unless you extend him. If you restructure by paying him 2 million up front, then his cap hit would be reduced by 1 million this year to a total of 8.1 million this year and 10.5 million next year. Any more than that would violate the 30% rule.

So unless we extend him beyond 2010, any cap relief we get by restructuring would be minimal at best. Is he worth 8.1 million this year?? Would be want to extend him beyond 2010? How much do we want to pay him in 2011 when he is 32 years old??

If my numbers are correct we can't do much more besides either extend him or cut him.

Lucas is on the bubble. I see him as the weakest link in the backfield, particularly when you look at his pay vs the results. The problem is that it's difficult to determine if his subtle, but decided fall-off has been due to his aging physical ability, a decline in his head, or being forced to play a soft cover style of defense that does not play to his strengths (or all of the above). Unlike with Jake, there are probably clearer options as replacements for Lucas, so losing him (or keeping him) would probably not be that profound.

Been waiting for Bolt to comment on Florence. Research I've done on him myself is inconclusive.

Very good athlete, not so smart though.

He looked very good with Merriman coming off the edge, and Phillips the other while Merriman took up the double team.

Both of them were fierce, and Williams was getting good push up the middle. This year, Merriman out, and teams slid the double over to Phillips' side for protection, they did not have the passrush of old.

What happened was Cro was exposed, and the D was not able to get as many QB hurries, thus less int's.

When Flo looked so good, so did Cro and QJ. I do not think that Flo is in the NA, Jammer, Revis catagory, but he is a very good nickle.

Everyone in SD hates he and McCree for losing that NE game after they went 14-2.

Final judgment, good nickle, that could be great with some good passrush.

Florence was in Jacksonville this past year. San Diego cut him last year. Jacksonville this year.

SD did not cut him, he walked as a FA.

I was saying that he looked really good as the no 2 in SD when Merriman and Phillips were getting tons of pressure. He signed a huge FA deal, and did not look so good because Jax could not get any pressure from the front 4.

Like I said, if we can get pressure, he would be a very good FA pickup for cheap to play the nickle.
