Could Wharton's days be numbered?

I disagree, pass blocking is where he excels as a guard. His run blocking is really hit and miss and he can be easily exploited. There is a reason he was originally thought of as a left tackle...

He can fill in if needed but he is not that great as pass blocker at tackle. When Gross got hurt last year and he filled in he gave up a total of 8.5 sacks. This year he moves back to guard and in 10 games he gives up 2.5.

In 2008 at guard he gives up 2.5 in 14 games while in 2007 when he played significant time at left tackle again, he gave up 9 sacks.

So I would agree that his pass blocking as a guard is much better than as a tackle.

But I disagree that his runblocking is hit or miss.

His run blocking is the key to why the left side of the line is where the team primarily ran last year with 75% of all running plays going up the middle or to the left side. He really doesn't have good lateral movement but his straight ahead push is quite good.

The thinking about him being a left tackle was obviously erroneous.

One of the cornerstones of the O-line through it all has been Travelle Wharton, who, until his injury last season was as rock-solid as anyone could ask. And 30 years old as an O-lineman means nothing...
