With All This Newton Debate...

Catalyst

It's easy to lose sight of the fact that we're even considering him (and we are, even the anti-Cam posters have to realize this by now) signals a major shift in the way this organization is approaching things.

I mean, to think that we are so seriously considering a player like Cam - that, even as a fan of his, I admit - represents such a huge risk, is such a departure from the last 9 years. Can you even imagine us considering Newton if Fox were still here? Fox's head would explode if we didn't take another DL for him to plug in. Cam represents the biggest potential risk this franchise has ever taken - he will be the biggest if we draft him.

I really think it's almost been lost in all the debate on Cam as a player, but the truth is we have never had a player like this on the Panthers. Not even close. Drafting him would change a LOT in terms of the way this franchise is perceived around the league and by the media - and I think by a lot of fans as well.

I've noticed that a lot of people here are concerned with how the team is perceived. Even more so than the x's and o's of the game.

I have noticed that too. What really irks me though, is that these are the same people who hated John Fox's guts for being too conservative.

JR would never draft a guy who has yet to prove he is NFL worthy that describes himself as an 'icon' and 'entertainer'

That is why other than Jake, we never had a decent quarterback in his regime and he didn't have any back to back winning seasons. Given that Rivera is charged with developing a consistent winner I am glad we are going in a different direction. Lets see who is more successful over the next five years, Rivera or the Panthers.

Yet everybody seems to think teams are going to be dying to trade up for the guy  If he is that bad why will teams give up multiple picks for him??

If the rookie pay scale stayed the same as previous years, and with the Panthers somewhat conservative approach, I don't see us taking a chance at a $50 milllion mistake with Newton. With the CBA negotiations ongoing, the general consensus has been that rookie pay scales will be dramatically decreased. I think the gamble becomes less "risky" to draft a guy like Cam when you are only stuck on the hook for about half of what previous #1 picks would have cost you in guaranteed money.

The "boom or bust" factor will always be there with Newton, but the Panther's front office needs to decide at what price is it willing to take a chance on Newton and if the new CBA will accomodate the $$$ they are willing to fork up.

when u tie your self worth to the image of your football team, folks tend to do that. Whats sad is being the worst team in the league doesnt faze them or rile them up like the image and identity of our qb. Even when they are dead wrong, they are too selfish to admit it. We now see the damage conservative unimaginative football does to a fanbase long term.

All I care about is the team winning and enjoying myself watching or attending games and having a little distraction from reality. If they win with one style or another I don't particularly care. If they get national attention or if some dumbass is South Florida finally figures out where that the Carolina Panthers do in fact play in Carolina I dont care....it has no real affect on my life one way or the other.

I'll just never ever get the whining for attention or repsect thing.
