What would you do if this was your child.

I wouldn't threaten going to an attorney or the media with your 1st meeting with the school. They would immediately go into defense mode and let the board of education's attorneys start handling the situation which would seriously bog things down with red tape. The principle and police should be the first choices right now. Save other options AFTER you are convinced that not enough is being done.

In my view, they already haven't done enough, so let's skip the "give them a chance" bit. You have to be serious, because the situation is serious. The longer that child stays in school, the more at risk the OP's child is (if he's there) or some other child is. Let them go on the defensive if that's what they want, but don't let up on them ... they will have no choice but to act.

I agree with someone else's post here ... don't go in angry, but go in determined and serious.

true story.

When I was in eighth grade there was this girl who broke up with this guy. While they were both from less than favorable homes, the guy was a foster child who had never been shown real love. He took the break up very hard, and in the next few days he brought a bowie knife to school. He walked into her home room that morning, and shoved the knife in her stomach. She died not long after. This was not the first time he had been a problem for other students.

If you expect the school to handle problem children in any serious manner it seems you are expecting too much.

step by step...

I would have made sure the story my kid is telling is in fact 100% factual...you know 8 year olds like to embellish the truth from time to time!

second, cops, without a doubt, I would have called the cops...like within the first couple minutes of seeing my child injured. I would let the cops deal with all the preliminary legal crap too.

first thing next morning I would be at the school and see how that conversation went

subsequent actions would be determined by the outcome of those first couple steps.

those that talk about vigilante justice and broken arms....the assaulter is 8!! Let me know how beating up an 8 year old works out for you!

File a report with the police, he assaulted your child so of course you should press charges. Since it seems his parents aren't taking care of him he needs to be institutionalized.

After you've done all that, dig up the septic tank in your backyard. Lure the kid to your house somehow and throw him in, get him all covered in sh*t. Then pull him out and let him go. If he says anything, your septic tank was getting repaired and the kid came by to finish the job and fell in, and you actually ended up saving his life.

Pay a 12 year old to beat the dogpoo out of him with a bar of soap in an old sock.

I really do hope you get this issue resolved properly though.

Funny how those zero tolerance policies work though, huh?

Good kids are usually a lightning rod for this kind of BS, so enroll him in a self defense class if you can. Krav Maga is nice.
