Newton’s pro day shows why he shoulf be No 1

I think our HC gets that we need a QB so he's looking at the most hyped QB in the draft very closely. I'll say this to you as I do towards the other side of the issue: Why convince yourself so much that this is gonna 100% happen? Just go with it, trust Rivera, and keep an open mind. Why get so pissed about others opinions about who we may possibly get? That's just silly bro

Well said.

And he may not be a better fit for our system. I do not see how Buffalo isn't in th hunt, Cincinnati, and maybe Arizona and Tennessee.

Heck, Fairley, who also plays a need position, was very impressive yesterday. Cam was OK.

Cam was "OK" when you could argue he will never look better. He was not very accurate and huggers blame the wind. Bradford and Ryan were much better. Put in a complex scheme, coverages, and a rush, Bradford and Ryan are 10 x better than Newton will be. There is no way you can say he is a lock for the #1 pick.

If we draft him, Rivera's neck is WAY out there. If we do not draft him, Rivera's neck is WAY out there. That is why Rivera is up close and personal with Cam. He wants to know the deal before making the most important decision in his football career. Nobody knows yet. They have many more pro days to attend and Gabbert has not thrown for anyone yet. Besides, I am betting we trade down if possible. If not, I think Quinn or Peterson are topping their boards right now. With so much indecision, when it comes down to crunch time, they will take the shut down corner or the freakish End from UNC, IMO.

are you and cam newton redefining the QB position?

Ha... not at all. But it takes a certain lack of naivety and a good bit of honesty with yourself as well as to others, to realize there is a "prescribed" stereotype our "establishment", or our "system" has set in the minds of fans as to what a franchise QB is supposed to be... on several levels.

Just because he doesn't fit those molds exactly (think Peyton Manning), people aren't willing to give him a shot, despite being a proven winner, and athletic phenom.

You really think that because he "doesn't fit those molds" people don't want to give him a chance??

Do you think Gabbert fits the "mold" of Peyton Manning? How about Locker? The only QB near the top of this class that I would compare to Manning really is Mallett and that's extremely generous to Mallett, lol.

Just because we don't want to draft one of those guys with the first overall doesn't mean we don't like QBs who are in a "different mold" than Manning

I don't think Manning is the prototype for the NFL QB anymore. I think we'll find that over the next 5-10 years Aaron Rodgers will become that prototypical NFL QB and teams will look for similar prospects.

Rodgers is more the mold of Manning than he is the mold of Cam

Err... I'm not quite ready to annoint Rodgers with the crown of best QB in the league. He's elite for sure... but Manning has done more with quite a bit less in his time in Indianapolis.

Manning has almost single handedly gotten the Colts into the play offs every year since 2008 despite having the 31st (2008), 32nd (2009 - Super Bowl runner ups), and 29th (2010) ranked Rushing teams in the league.

In comparison, since Aaron Rodgers took over, Green Bay has been 17th (2008), 14th (2009), and 24th (2010), ranked Rushing, and missed the Playoffs in 2008.

If Manning had just ONE back of Williams/Stewart's calibur the Colts would be dominant.

So you're saying for a QB to go #1 overall, they need to be like Manning?

Kinda proving my point here....

Or maybe it takes a fair amount of paranoia to see something that isn't there.

Newton has gained a couple more critics recently.

Former NFL and Panthers (for one year anyway) QB Jack Trudeau said the problem at the combine wasn't timing but mechanics. His specific read was that Newton's mechanics "suck" (link)

But not everyone agrees. Former NFL quarterback Jack Trudeau, who currently co-hosts a drive-time FOX Sports Radio show with Dominic Zaccagnini, said during my weekly Monday morning visit that Newton has flaws.

“I love his arm,” Trudeau said of Newtown. “But his mechanics suck.”

Trudeau explained that it was the mechanics and not timing issues with unfamiliar receivers that hurt Newton at the Scouting Combine. Trudeau also believes that Newton showed similar mechanical flaws at his media-only session.

Trudeau spent 10 seasons in the NFL, with 12 starts. He finished his career with more than 10,000 passing yards.

And then there's new Twitter resident Brian Billick. A few recent posts (link)

- with Auburns pro-day in the books, I look elsewhere for a QB before Cam Newton. Someone will gamble with him, I wouldn't.

- after the hundreds and hundreds of reminders...yes, we gambled on a QB, thats why Im tweeting about the draft rather than prepping for one!

- Simply saying, i wouldn't do it again on Cam Newton - not in the 1st round
