Newton’s pro day shows why he shoulf be No 1

That's because a lot of people on this board are blind. Newton would be a good pick maybe in the 5-10 range after watching today. #1 is to much of a reach. Qb is our biggest need if Clausen doesn't work out. That doesn't mean we reach and take a qb with the #1 that isn't deserving. We have other wholes on the team too that would instantly be upgraded if we take another player. Dareus PP or even Green. We cannot afford to miss on this pick Newton looked average at best today.

This goes back to my point. If Newton was a #1 pick before today, he should still be a #1 pick after today. Why is what a guy does in workouts so important? He is being drafted to play football, with an offense and a defense. You can't judge any player (positive or negative) based on what they do with only one side of the ball.

I don't understand putting so much stock in throwing at the combine/workouts. You have at least a year's worth of tape on a guy. How is him throwing without a defense an indication of how good he will be?

Prior to the Combine, there were a load of people saying that was the most important thing.

When Newton had a bad day throwing, the Combine suddenly became irrelevant.

If he'd had a top flight workout today, I'm pretty sure you'd have seen folks on here spinning that Pro Days were a better indicator than the Combine :lol:

Newton did not change his draft stock today during his workout. Who knows what he said to who, because he had a lot of informal interviews today and maybe some formals, no idea. But his actual workout was not good enough to seriously increase his stock imo... and I don't think it was 'bad enough' to hurt it either.

Lol I did notice some people do that on both sides. Maybe it's just me but every player should be judged based on game film. Maybe if you want to see a certain thing then a workout is fine, but I would take a guy who looks good in a game over a guy who looks good in a workout any day.

Just watched the press session Newton had after his pro day. A few comments/observations:

1) Asked how he thought he did, his response was "okay". He repeatedly emphasized that he understands he has to continue to work hard every day. There were no 3rd person responses and he was very humble.

2) Given the way he speaks and presents himself, I do not understand people questioning his intelligence. Wonderlic scores aside, he seems to be an intelligent young man.

3) One humorous note, he mentioned that Chis Weinke was one of the people he was working with alongside Warren Moon.

I understand people questioning his skills, that is certainly valid, but I just don't get some of the personal attacks that have been launched against him. Forget the press blurbs that are intended to bump up site hits, and listen to the kid talk with an open mind.

It's not just you.

I believe you grade based on game film. You can use workouts to differentiate between guys you have the same grade on and/or check on injuries and such, but moving a guy up your board based on a workout is asking to draft the next Mike Mamula.

I do not think Newton is stupid by any means, and though I have no idea "how smart" he is, I don't think anyone is seriously suggesting he's lacking intelligence, but perhaps lacking in good judgment at times in the past that caused him to do stupid things. We all make mistakes, though, and hopefully he has learned and grown from his.

Oh yeah, that's right, because running QBs fumble about 3x more than pocket passers.

Ok, so it must've been your turn to assume... So, what makes you think Clausen makes more reads than Cam would? I certainly didn't see anything to suggest that last year. And running gains more yards than throwing it out of bounds last time I checked, so I'd rather take a guy that can run over an idiot who can't read a defense and checks down, throws out of bounds, or throws a TD the other way.

And show me the stats of "running QBs" fumbling 3x more than pocket passers. Wait, that's right! There isn't any because you can't create a set of stats to divide them into binaries to do so.

Yeah, It was meant to be funny. I wasn’t trying to be an a$$. Anyway, I’m new here… Hello everyone! FWIW, I’m not anti Cam, but I’m definitely not on the Cam-wagon either. I just find some of the claims about him a little ridiculous.
