Newton’s pro day shows why he shoulf be No 1

Thinking that draft expert rankings have anything to do with how teams rank players is a pretty clear sign that someone doesn't get it :nonod:

That is all I have to go on :(. I know what your point is. I just don't buy it. I just don't think it is a smoke screen. I'm also not sold that we are taking him.

It just seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through for one player that may not be in enough demand to warrant trading valuable second round picks for.

I don't know. Just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. I don't buy it. I don't see it. I don't think that is what is happening.

If he were the consensus top QB in the draft it would make a lot more sense.

How come we aren't sending the same vibes on Gabbert. If he is really rated higher in most people's eyes why is he not the guy we are putting out the smoke for???

Again, why is this relegated to only Cam, yet not Gabbert?? Or Fairley, or Peterson, or Dareus??

Why would we put all of our eggs in with Cam in terms of smoke screens??

It doesn't make sense to me.

Because it's easier to fall in love with someone's "Potential" than it is someone who will just be a steady starter, you know?

You don't trade up for solid, you trade up for mind blowing. Some people feel Cam has mind blowing potential, others don't, but it's easier to fall in love and want to trade for that than it is for "safe"

Actually it does to me. If they really wanted Gabbert they could hype up Newton and bluff Bills/Bengals into thinking they where going after Newton and getting them to trade up for a 2nd or something. I see that as the only way we could trade back then if we are there at 3 just get the guy they wanted all along in Gabbert. If nobody bites they just get him at #1.

Of course with all this said I really just think they like Newton. Whether they pick him is another matter entirely.

I agree with that, which is why I came away from his Pro Day feeling a bit better, but not enough to change my opinion of taking him #1.

He is still very raw. He still missed on a huge percentage of his passes in shorts. Past #1s have looked much more polished, and even they were supposed to have an adjustment/transition period. That isn't to say Newton can never get there - and this is where our private workout with him before the draft will be huge - but right now, I just don't think he's a good fit for us.

I like Cam Newton, just not in our situation right now.

Given our last top 5 pick was 2002 I don't think we can pass on the right now and hope that we will get another chance to get a franchise guy down the road. But I understand the sentiment. I just feel like we need to fix the now and the future by picking a QBin the draft and in free agency. Bring Moore and Clausen to camp as well. Maybe between al of them we can find someone who can play.

I seems like an awful lot of work just to HOPE someone wants him AND are willing to give up the type of value it would take to make the move.

It's not only for that reason. It's likely a combo of both.

We are doing due diligence and we are saying good things about him.

It really doesn't take that much effort.

We might decide to pick him, but if we don't, we want someone else to think we might so they trade up.

It's not rocket science.

Yeah but a team won't call and say "Hey I really want Newton will you trade picks with me?" Even if they want the pick we won't know who they want. We might have a pretty good idea but maybe they are smoke screening us also to lead US to believe they want Cam but really want someone that we really want or need.

Say we like both DTs. Buff calls and wants to trade picks. We think "great! They want Cam and we can get either Dareus or Fairley at 3."

Then Buffalo shocks us by picking Fairley, Denver gets Dareus at #2 and now we are in a position where we can't get the position of need we wanted.

Remember if a team wants to trade up we won't necessarily know who they are trading for.

They could be smoke screening too.

You don't NEED a top 5 pick to fix quarterback, though.

Almost every time I can think of a team trading up to the #1 they went QB. I really only see Newton as having enough upside vs. risk to be worth the trade. I doubt any team is going to give up a 2nd just to get a guy that could be there when they originally pick. Yeah its a gamble but what isn't when you talking about the draft.

has anyone ever had a bad pro day?

Bad Pro Day for Hakeem Nicks.

Ten receiver coaches from around the league showed up in Chapel Hill to watch the workout of Hakeem Nicks and they are likely to leave very disappointed.

Sources have told us Nicks weighed in at 226-pounds, looking overweight and out of condition. By contrast Nicks was 212-pounds at the combine. He looked poor running agility drills and injured his hamstring. We will have more as is comes in.

For a QB as polarizing as Cam?

Maybe Vick. He was similarly polarizing coming out . So you may have a good point there.

I'm still not buying the smoke screen stuff.
