Ron Rivera pays Newton special attention at Pro Day

From watching the broadcast he didn't seem to be watching his workout very closely at all. He is also not the best judge of offensive talent by his own admission. I have a hard time believing his QB coach wouldn't be there for a guy they were pretty sure about. Especially to go watch Mallet run a forty in 3 days 45 minutes and 6 seconds.

Schula will see plenty of him when they bring him in for a private interview and workout.

If we show no obvious interest, they may think we aren't interested in drafting him. After all, we did spend our first pick of last year's draft on a quarterback, we have a defensive head coach, have huge holes at DT and other needs than just QB.. add to that the various "popular perceptions" about the kind of player we'd bring in (either not wanting to pay someone high profile OR character concerns) and I think it'd make sense for us to talk him up.

What you don't seem to understand though, is that we don't need to show any more interest in Cam, than we do for PP, Gabbert, Fairley, Dareus, bowers or Quinn, and they will still have to talk to us first, because there is no way for them to know which one we are really interested in the most...unless we tell them. And that ain't happening.

With all the polarization on this guy right now I just don't think a team is going to give up what it would take to trade up.

I just don't think we are throwing up an bunch of smoke screens just to try and trade our pick.

But we could be but at this point not a lot of people or analysts have given him the type of grades to warrant a team trading up for him. If the Panthers had the 3rd pick in the draft I would think it would be a TERRIBLE idea to trade future draft picks for the guy. But having the number one pick I do think he is good enough to consider taking even though I don't see him being a hot enough commodity to trade up for.

It's a combination of factors... one is the media attention Cam is getting, the other is the fact that he's a very likable guy, and also he is on our radar. All this, in addition to the value of the pick increasing if Cam Newton is that #1 guy, means it makes sense for us to talk him up.

BTW, as I said before, there was no mention of the fact the same thing happened with Fairley and Rivera. The ESPN 360 thing even mentioned them talking a few times, and it was VERY clear how focused Rivera was on Fairley's workouts.

Well of course we might draft him, that's my whole point. Just like we might draft every other player we watch at their pro day. There is absolutely no reason to pin point any one player in order to get offeres to trade down.
