What Will Your Reaction Be, If Panthers Decide to Take Newton #1 Before Draft?

I will never support Hurney again. Right now all Cam is is a project that wont help us for 2-3 years. He is not a QB that can come in and help right off the bat. With the first round pick that player should be starter material from day one. Do I think Cam can succeed yes but like I said it wont be til 2-3 years before he is ready. To wish him starting this year is just asking him to fail.

:mad2: To this "he is a project that wont help us for 2-3 yrs" arguement. I can understand if people think Cam will never be a Franchise QB but this dont draft him cause he cant start right away is stupid. If you think the guy will be a franchise QB then having to develop him for a season or two is not that bad to reap the benefit. That is generally how drafting a QB is supposed to work. I guess this imaginary QB who the Panthers will get to draft next season will be able to come in and start right away :sosp:

The Panthers are not going to be drafting Cam to start right away and will be bringing in a Veteran no matter what. With Cam being drafted then it just might take 2-3 seasons, by passing on him its just going to take even longer for there to be a long term solution at QB here.

I can't speak for Squirrel, but for me, why draft a projected franchise QB that is 2-3 years away in back-to-back drafts. Not to say that Claussen had the accolades that Cam has right now, but Claussen was thought of to be a potential franchise quarterback, but was going to need some grooming. After Jimmy's first year, many are forgetting that he could still be a franchise guy in the right scheme. So why, with the #1 overall pick, add another signal caller to the stable that probably needs a few years to get up to speed when you already have one that already has one year under his belt. Why not bring in a veteran FA quarterback to help bring last year's draft pick along and see what you've got. If we didn't have the holes on the DL, WR, or the DB question marks, then go ahead and roll the dice on Cam. We don't have that luxury, and it's pretty lame to give up on Claussen this quick, which in essence is what you're doing with the gambles that are this year's QB class. If Luck was coming out, then I'm okay with it, because he's a once a decade QB from day 1. Cam, Gabbert, Mallet and Locker are not, so why not address another need. It's not every year that you pick #1 overall.

First I dont think the Panthers give up on Clausen. It wouldnt be a bad position to be in to end up have two young QBs that end up being good to great. I dont think they expected to be picking so high when they drafted Clausen last season; but here they are and if they think Cam has a lot more upside then Clausen you take him. They are going to bring in a Vet FA QB anyway and definately need to no matter what. Lets not forget they drafted Stewart when we already had D.Williams.

I'll be thrilled, but that doesn't mean that I'm crazy happy. I'll be juggling between the hope he brings and the potential he has vs the risks that come with him. I'll root for him regardless of course. I will also be hoping to god that Chud uses/develops him in the right way.

If we settle on Newton before the draft, it'll confirm Hurney is a blithering idot of whom natural selection should have disposed of.

This would only be relevant after a CBA: Getting a contract done with him will be a pain. If we decide to take him, offer him a deal based on the new (possibly) projected pay scale. If he turns it down, turn him down.
