Mallett a first-rounder after pro day workout?

Posted: March 8th, 2011 | Bucky Brooks | Tags: Ryan Mallett,

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Ryan Mallett’s workout Tuesday at Arkansas’ pro day could propel him back into the first round.

The junior was absolutely sensational during the workout, and his natural talent is unrivaled in this year’s draft. As a strong-armed passer, Mallett easily makes all of the requisite throws in the pro game. He had little trouble putting the ball on the proper shoulder with velocity and zip. His arm strength, touch and accuracy also stood out on deep throws. His high-arcing throws consistently hit receivers in stride 40-45 yards down field, but he also showed the ability to adjust the arc and trajectory of his throws to match the speed of his intended receiver.

Mallett’s footwork and fundamentals were sound in the pocket, as he quickly sets up and comes to balance following three-, five- or seven-step drops. His natural rhythm comes from his extensive experience running a pro-style attack, and he shouldn’t have any problem transitioning to the next level from a physical standpoint.

When looking for a flaw in Mallett’s workout, I would have to point to his disappointing athleticism. He ran a slow 5.37 seconds in the 40-yard dash and only registered a 26-inch vertical. Those numbers indicate that he will struggle escaping the pocket and that he isn’t a threat to run.

However, everyone who watched the game tape understood that fact going into the workout, and only wanted to see how well Mallett could reset his feet and throw on time. He didn’t really get a chance to showcase those skills in this controlled workout, but he will need to show those skills in private workouts.

If he can address that flaw and the looming character concerns, Mallett could hear his name called at the end of the first round.

After watching it, again, unless Gabbert comes out looking like superman, Cam is my pick. And even if Gabbert does well, Cam is still probably my pick because his physical abilities are just too good to pass up. As long as the guy has his head on straight and is determined to improve and be the best he can be, he's the #1 pick IMO.

i take two things from this workout, as someone who is honestly a cam newton fan but not sure if he is the right fit at #1:

1. he's still not consistently accurate. "work in progress" is both the most used and most apt description of his touch on medium and short throws. it doesn't seem particularly complicated to me to fix, but then again i'm not paid to do this and i'm not the one who's going to be trying to fix them. the fact is he's not there yet. the arm is there and he is dead-eye accurate often enough (especially on deep throws) that you can believe he will put it together and be dependable and consistent. but that is down the road.

2. he is working hard and is definitely taking seriously the evolution from a college spread QB to a pro QB who can work primarily under center. even as a layman i can see more fluidity in his drop back and his accuracy in 7 step drops, compared to the combine. he still does that little hop thing after the 7 step drop and i think whatever QB coach he has in the pros will try to eliminate that. his work ethic is an asset. his ambition is an asset. his arm is definitely an asset. he will be one of the most athletically gifted NFL QB's the moment he takes the field.

i think there's a very good chance that he will be the best QB on whichever team that drafts him very quickly. just not sure if he'll be accurate enough to put on the field even then, without some serious work. but, that's what training camp is for. so i guess nothing has changed: if you believe in newton, then you draft him and feel really good. if you can't be sure, then you have to go another direction at #1.

Haha his QB coach is trying to sell him to Buffalo it sounds like... Or really any number of cities, but the reference to playing in an "out door city" (likely suggesting weather, outside of a dome) in a "tough, physical division" made me think of the Bills.

I think he may have said that to remind people how windy it was there. So people take it into account when they are evaluating his day.

gabbert's numbers at the combine were not all that far behind newton at all. Gabbert is a pretty beastly athlete in his own right as well.
