Ram Question

the nice thing about having overkill in ram/speed/etc is that you'll be more future-proof than the next guy.

When windows 8-3d comes out in 5 years, you won't have to upgrade your hardware.

That's true but it's a spend now vs spend later type of thing. Also you have to look at hardware advances that require completely new stuff. The high end i7's now have support triple channel ram(that I'm skeptical of btw) which means your existing ram won't work with. I usually always lean towards spending as little as possible now.

there's a happy medium, in hardware there's usually a jump where all of a sudden, you have to spend twice as much to get a better set up. I like to buy my stuff right at that point.

this. also imo you get more bang for your buck with RAM than any other hardware.

That doesn't hold quite as true anymore. That notion stems from the days when a PC would have 32 or 64 mb of memory and the need for paging was common. RAM has become so cheap that most PCs have plenty as is(my home computer running XP only has 2 gigs and it's just fine). So if you need it, it's certainly the best bang for your buck, but if you don't, it's wasted money.
