Ram Question

The Saltman

Recommended Posts

Why not build it yourself? Sooo cheap, screw Dell.

Also, for HD porn where's the Hex core processor? Need more cores to render it man.

Lastly, 8 gigs of RAM is slightly overkill for a lot things but a man needs his HD porn I guess.

The dell has already been shipped. thanks for the advise tho ;)

Yeah depending on what you (all joking aside) want to use it for, you'll probably be alright with a prefab. As long as all the parts are seated properly and in working order there shouldn't be any issues. Upgrading shouldn't be hard either if you want to replace anything, RAM is hella easy. Only thing Dell does is lock the mobo which won't be an issue as I doubt you'll be overclocking or fiddling with the processor at all, lol.

the nice thing about having overkill in ram/speed/etc is that you'll be more future-proof than the next guy.

When windows 8-3d comes out in 5 years, you won't have to upgrade your hardware.

ya I have no clue how to overclock anyway so thats out of the question. I just want it, like jas said, so If I do upgrade anything it will be seamless. and honestly if there is anything else I would upgrade on this thing it would be the processor and or the software when it comes out in the future.

PS. I didnt pay for the computer with my own money hahahaha

Oh yeah, I agree. I just don't have the money to spend on RAM. When I build again (hopefully Q3/4 this year) I'll toss in 8 if I can spare the change, it's just right now it's not worth it on my PC. With a 2 yr old processor and GPU my current PC is slightly out of date.

im not all that knowledgeable on stuff like that...what are the key things to look for on the manual?

Look for some kind of RAM settings section. It should tell you the different configurations that you can use(Stick 1 in Slot A with Stick 2 in Slot B or Stick 1 in SlotB with Stick 2 in Slot D, etc). Then on crucial you should be able to search for ram that is compatible/been tested. The problem may be Dell doesn't give you that info so you have to go through them to upgrade.

I'm with everyone else in that 8 gigs is probably overkill. My laptop here at work has 8 gigs and I maybe use 1/2 of that. Right now I have 3 browsers running, Outlook, multiple instances of SQL server, my IDE(heavy memory use), multiple application servers, etc and I'm only using 3.5G. Odds are you're not going to get anything out of that extra memory.
