Cardio...

Recommended Posts

Good subject:

Krav Maga: Wednesday = "Beatdown Wednesday" or 2-hours of Cardio. Music is whatever the instructor chooses. Usually System of a Down, or the sounds of people dying of exhaustion next to me.

Running: I love to run. I either run 5 -7 miles, or try to do a 5k fast (did a 27:16 last week). Music is usually Queens of Stone Age, ZZ Top, Dirty South Rap, or Techno. The tempo on those kinds of music sync up perfectly with my stride. Was doing the treadmill this winter when I couldn't run outdoors, but that really fugged up my knee and hip, so until I can get back on asphalt or rubber, it's all elliptical for me now.

My biggest issue is boredom. My routine now is running a 5k on the treadmill then 10 minutes of biking. 40 minutes total is about all I can take of cardio mentally.

Two hours? Sounds like a nightmare.

Usually do some cardio pre-workout, ill hop on a bike for 10 minutes just to get the blood flowing, then run a couple miles on a treadmill.

In a couple weeks I'm starting HIIT (High intensity interval training), where one jogs at a comfortable pace for a couple minutes and sprints for 30 seconds or so, then goes back to jogging. Changing the heart rate constantly burns fat the quickest. It's brutal but easily the best way to shed weight fast. If you have access to a track, thats usually the best for HIIT, sprint on the straight away for 100 meters or so.

Music choice is crucial, I hate being able to hear myself breathe heavy. Lately I've been listening to strictly house/techno/electronic dance music while I run and lift weights. There's a Swedish house producer by the name Avicii who is excellent. I prefer house and techno because sometimes you can have 2 hour mixes that constantly play and I never find myself changing the song as I did with other genres.

Where do you do this at home?

When I'm in the gym, I usually do 20 minutes of walking, 1 hour or so of lifting, following by two or three weight based cardio exercises, step ups, etc.

I probably should do more cardio than I do... one more week (after a trip to the asthma doc) and I'm back in the gym after this damn shoulder ordeal.

There is a gym at the end of my street I go to. Usually drop the boys off at school and stop there before home. 40 minutes of cardio, 20 minutes of weights and I feel pretty good about myself. Home by 9:00 or so and ready for the day.

Part of the basement remodel was my gym.

Nothing fancy, but I either do 4 miles on max incline on the elliptical or 5 miles on the treadmill depending on how the knee feels.

In good weather I do the run outside.

The gym has a tv, so I watch whatever.

When I run outside it is sports radio.

Cool, I can't workout at home... hard to get motivated. I also have a hard time working out in the morning, makes me tired later in the day, I go around 5.

The best time for me to go is actually about 11AM, used to do that when I worked evening shift back in the day. Can't do that now though...

Boredom is an issue, but idk what u can do about that? Better music, watch TV?

My gym has TV's on the treadmill, that helps...

I can't do talk radio when I run. I need a beat to sync my stride or heart-rate to and take my mind off the workout. When I listen to talk radio I start thinking, and when I start thinking, I start thinking about how tired I am and how much I want to stop, and how "Oh, I'll just go up to that light pole and the walk for a while."

So no talk radio for me.

This doesn't make sense.

No, it's true. Interval workouts are the best for fat burning. If you run at a constant rate, even if that rate is very fast, your body will acclimatize and your heartrate will slow down.

When I did my 5k and was going 8mph, by the end, my heartrate was only 130. When I did interval training the next week (5 mph (1 minute) -> 4.5 mph (2 minutes) -> 5.5 mph (1 minute) -> 5mph (2 minutes) ... etc.) My heart-rate was fluctuating between 140 and 170 the entire time.

Well, the trick is to find a way to keep your heart rate up. I use a heart monitor and make sure it stays up there. Doesn't matter how you do it, as long as its up there and stays up there you are burning the same amount of fat.
