There were more to our problems than Clausen last year

Before I get all the hate threads let me just state this is just my opinion.

I think the demise of last year was more than just having Clausen as our qb.To me it started with cutting veteran wrs like Moose and Vincent on the OL among others on the defensive line.We also gave Jake 12 million to leave where he clearly had value at the very least as a mentor.Lets not forget Matt Moore was performing well at the end of the season before. Then came the draft where we picked a QB that dropped in the draft without any thought in seeing if he was really our franchise QB of the future. Then we trade up for A Edwards who like Clausen was not going to have an impact on our season. So what we end up with is a lame duck coach with new qb and three new receivers and a depleted OL and DL.Then come the injuries to TDavis,Otah among others. If that was not enough Fox runs the offense like a middle school team allowing defenses to put 8 or 9 in the box and shut down our running game.

There is literally no way of knowing how good Clausen will be this year based on last season. I hope Moore comes back healthy. Every possible thing that could be wrong was wrong. Some say, "Well, I saw enough and he gave me nothing to believe in." I understand the comment, but I don't understand what people were expecting to see. Not being the first team QB in camp makes it difficult, not to mention coaching.

There were games when the offense had 8 players at positions they did not play the year before. For most of the time Clausen was QB, Kalil, Smith, King, and Gross were the only starters from 2009. And of the SEVEN NEW PLAYERS, 3 were playing positions they had never played before (Williams RT, Schwartz RG, and Bernadeau had only been RG and C before taking Wharton's place at LG).

The kid never had a chance. We should be embarrassed for putting him in that situation. Unfortunately, QBs bust a lot (cannot figure out why, though), so we have to be smart and bring in some new blood. But I know enough about football not to bash Clausen because no QB would have succeeded here last season. I don't care who they are.

The reality is that if we had done what we should have, Clausen would have never seen the field and we wouldn't be having this discussion. We got rid of Jake which was a mistake since we were going to pay him anyway and pulled Moore way too soon. We failed to bring in another vet instead of going with Pike who didn't even get any reps.

Of course I am not a great one to ask because I was the biggest critic of the way we gutted the team. While everyone else was touting how much better we would be with the youth movement while I correctly predicted we would have no veteran leadership, would have no depth, and when the injuries hit we would be awful.

Clausen sucked but so did the whole team. Clausen had plenty of help through out the roster.

Jake Delhomme had some success in this offense and he may be out of the league next year bc he is so bad. So if one of the worst QBs in the league had some success in this offense what does that say about Clausen who didn't?? Even Jake's terrible season two years ago he was able to make the offense more productive.

It isn't just that Clausen was bad, he was wholly inept. He wasn't just not making plays, he was unable to sustain any drives. At times it seemed we couldn't even get one first down through the air in an entire game.

I am glad many here are as positive about Clausen as the are. I try. I have a hard time remaining optimistic.

Matt Moore, that is a different story. I just have a feeling that if we are going to see a major difference from last year it is going to be with Moore behind center.

And I am no big Moore fan. That is just how little faith I have in Clausen.

Here's to him proving me wrong. :cheers2:

I'm gonna go on a limb and say Matt Moore is a good QB, he's been the best QB on the team for some time. He's been better than Delhomme for a while but Jake D was god here. I'm also going to say Jimmy Clausen can be a good QB. Last season was bad on all fronts and they both had a lot of disadvantages. They both should get another crack at it imo and I have no doubt they will both be better in the new offense.

Teeray, the difference between last year and the year before was that Jake Delhomme was holding the team back in 09-10. There were several other issues in 10-11.

Firstly, Clausen won't improve until he changes that throwing motion of his. The guy is listed at 6'2" (players are usually shorter than what they are listed at), yet because of his side winding throws, he plays as though he is 5'11". You would think he was playing baseball due to all the bat downs defenses have been giving his pitches.

Peyton Manning is worth 8-9 wins to his team

Tom Brady is worth 9-10 wins to his team

Jimmy Clausen is worth 8-9 losses to his team

Still with this crap? Good god people. LET GO of last year. We can't change anything. It doesn't matter who sucked or why. All that matters is the team we field for 2011...if there is a 2011 season.

Why are you even posting on this thread if it does not interest you? All I am all saying is that drafting a qb is not the only answer to our problems.Mgmt has to do a better job of recognizing the consequences of their actions and learn a lesson from last year.As to your comment "it does not matter who sucked " is like saying do not learn from your mistakes. You must be a politician because if you do not learn from your mistakes in my profession you will be dead.

Our QB position has been holding us back since 2006.

And as much as I have been lobbying for Cam Newton we should have been addressing this position in the draft 3-4 years ago. We wouldn't be in this position.

I really feel like we are on the brink of being the Buffalo Bills post Kelly era unless we get serious about fixing the problem at that position. The Bills have only used one first round pick on QB since the Kelly era. It was a late first round pick on JP Losman.

Why?? They wanted that perfect fit. All the stars to align or have that sure fire prospect because they feared "wasting" that pick. They wanted the "safe" picks. They have traded for back ups. They have signed free agents. Not surprisingly it has failed.

They are now arguably the most irrelevant franchise in all the NFL after 2 decades of being one of the best.

We may be at that crossroads. You can't continue to sit back and hope the position fixes itself. Or try and use stop gap methods and quick fixes. We have to get a QB in the draft and trust our coaching staff to do their jobs and coach em up.

Until then expect the status quo. Every once in a while we might sneak in the playoffs but the only consistency we should expect is to be consistently average to below average.

You are correct...very little thought has been given to getting a franchise qb for some time.
