Union agrees to seven-to-ten day extension

Mr. Scot

Per PFT, citing Chris Mortensen. The NFL still has to agree before it goes into effect.

Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that Cohen has persuaded the union to agree to a 7-to-10-day extension. Now, the league needs to consent to a pushing of the deadline back by a week or more.

The disclosure means that someone has violated the vow of silence, and in turn has placed public pressure on ownership to agree to the extension. At this point, it will be difficult if not impossible for the league to not agree to extend the deadline and implement a lockout as of 12:00 a.m. Saturday.

That said, Mort reports that “major differences” between the two sides remain.

nobody knows how to bring two politically opposed sides together like congress.

"I'm from the government and I'm here to help"

I'd say it's not so much any actual assistance the government could offer as it is the threat of government involvement that would spur the NFL to action.

As mentioned elsewhere, there are few things the NFL fears, but government involvement is pretty high on the list.

Would they back down on some of their issues to keep the government from getting involved? I'd say it's possible.

Remember a couple of years ago when the NFL network wanted to only show a critical Eagles playoff implications game on the NFL Network, just until a senator mentioned it may force him to look into antitrust issues with it.... NFL changed their tune immediately.

This extension is a good sign only in the fact that it gives them more time to work something out. I am not convinced they ultimately will work something out, but at least it gives us another week of hope.

Not having the NFL, aside from the suckary or not watching it, would have a terrible impact on Charlotte. Think about how much money is spent on Sundays at the stadium, bars, etc. How much Panthers merchandise sales will be lost? How many hotels will lose money from visiting fans (lord knows the stadium will be filled with them).

Having one of these peering over your shoulder helps.

Rockefeller has mentioned how Congress might offer "assistance" a couple of times now.

I think they should if these spoiled children can't figure it out on their own.

I heard a guy from the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce yesterday say that a Panthers game brings Charlotte about 8 million, per game. Businesses in Charlotte and other cities can't afford to miss out on that kind of revenue because these guys can't figure out how to split up 9 billion dollars....

You know Obama didn't have a 'happy happy, joy joy' tone to his voice when mentioning he didn't want to get involved. Came across to me as 'You guys REALLY don't want me involved in this'.
