Draft Speak 101

Just the opposite actually. I think they spend a thousand times more time on it than we do.

Their jobs depend on it. If we're wrong, the worst thing that happens is we look dumb on a message board.

yeah.. I have to agree..

I've spent hours contemplating this type of poo due to office politics.... and I'm not forced to win/get fired while millions of dollars are at stake...

when you have a group of people (or teams) all trying to find an edge.. it's not far-fetched at all..

Bingo

Some folks take that at face value. Me? I acknowledge it could be true, but I have a hard time just accepting it straight up.

For that matter, have you heard the Panthers say jack about Patrick Peterson or A J Green? Nope, but then nobody's asking, are they?

Do we assume no interest merely because no reporters are asking or speculating about them?

I think the media and most fans are just getting caught up in all the franchise QB talk. Its all about Newton/Gabbert right now. We still got plenty of time.

The thing that makes this offseason so much fun is the amount of guys that can go to us at #1. I'm not trying to make any predictions, but of course I have my personal choices. Its more enjoyable to sit back and keep an open mind while watching it all play out...including fan freakouts about QB :)

I'm certain they analyze the players to the nth degree. It's the psy-ops stuff I don't think they waste so much time on.

I think you'd be surprised.

There are some pretty wild stories from prior drafts. In the days before call waiting, teams would call a prospect and keep him on the phone just so no other team could call him.

Heck, think back to just a few years ago. Half the sports media was convinced we were trading up to get Matt Ryan. Some of the ESPN guys actually got into on-air snits when we didn't.

Reverse smoke screen. I like it. It's the sexy play.

Thank you. I have never seen so much talk about a team with the #1 pick trying to smokescreen everybody.

see, I think this is how one faction gets started against another..

no one has said our team is trying to smoke screen everybody..

there have simply been points made that it is not out of the realm of possibility.. that hardly has the same implication.

The NFL is the highest stakes poker game there is. Millions of dollars and people's jobs are at stake every season.

Games are won and lost by inches. You've got teams that use video, steal signals and do any number of other things just trying to get an edge. And there's guys like John Fox who won't acknowledge that water is wet without a gun to his head.

And yet guys think teams wouldn't go so far as to fudge a little or feign interest in another prospect just to try and get the player they want or get a favorable trade?

Come on, people :nonod:

THere is also the fact that the board changes daily. Even with the top pick, they still have pro days to scout, interviews, free agent opportunities change regularly. They are actually considering dozens of scenarios. I think they really do not know for sure.

There should be a market for a QB, and I saw a mock today that had Gabbert going first and Cam to Buffalo #3. That should make Ariz, Cincy, SF, Tenn, and Washington want to deal with us. We oughta be talkin deal.

"Think you cannot afford to trade for the best player on your board and in the entire draft? Haven't you waited long enough for that franchise QB? The Carolina Panthers want to help and are willing to give you credit! You can switch first rounders with us for your second rounder and the balance of the deal can be settled in the 2012 draft. Here is how it works: Swap first rounders with us and throw in your second rounder in the 2011 draft. That is it. Depending on your spot in the draft, the balance of the trade will be settled next year with no interest! What do you have to lose, except losing?"

Throw in also that we tend to talk as if all the guys in the Panthers braintrust are in lockstep. Reality is there may be some rather hotly contested debates going on behind those closed doors. Maybe even hotter than the ones we engage in, because for them there are some real consequences involved.

Obviously, the public image has to stay united, but it's unrealistic to assume that's always true in private.

Yup, and conflict within certain boundaries is a healthy process. This drafting thing is an inexact science and as such there are bound to be differing opinions.

I don't know how much Hurney is in to smoke and mirrors - every time I've heard him speak about the draft he's refused to discuss our interest in any of the specific prospects. The most recent example was on the debut of his radio show, they actually brought in another guy to discuss the draft prospects and what we might do because Hurney wouldn't talk about it.

I think folks take some of Rivera's comments about Cam out of context, he's asked what he thinks about Cam and Rivera responds, it's not as if Rivera is seeking out reporters so he can talk about Cam. I'm sure Rivera would have glowing things to say about all the top prospects if he were asked.
