The "No Cocky Bastards" Rule...

Mr. Scot

meh it's a generaliztion in which it is true for the vast majority of WRs and this isn't any recent trend either.

btw...good job finding two of the very few exceptions.

Wes Welker... Greg Jennings... Brandon Stokley....

I can make a rather large list of awesome receivers that aren't Divas...

Don't take me the wrong way man. Not trying to bust your balls... but there are actually a lot more WRs that just play the game and are teammates first, than there are divas out there.

We just hear about the Divas the most, and probably is creating a false stereotype.

I think the point is that there is a relative increase in 'diva's' when looking at the positions. Wr and Cb have a higher percentage of that type of player.

Yeah.... I just don't know about that... I think this is just a perception thing.

Look at what happened with the Panthers. Peppers. Jenkins.

The national media didn't make a big deal about what these guys were saying, because the Front Office kinda swept their talk under the mat.

Another thing too.... when you see the big 50 yard TD play .... who's jumping into the crowd or putting on a show? Typically, a WR.

Peppers a diva? Are you serious? The guy was a recluse, aka the complete opposite of a diva.

See... this is the perception thing I'm talking about.

First off... there was the whole "taking plays off" thing. That's diva.

Then, at the end of his contract, he made quite a bit of noise about where he wanted to be. He even continued to talk smack about the Panthers when he landed in CHI. He obviously wasn't willing to play for us without one hell of a contract.

But it got little attention. WAY less attention than Smitty got from punching Lucas in the face.

I think Chud vouched for him, which made him an exception to the rule.

I thought about that, and I think that's what happened with Keyshawn (and Henning) but this time, I think it goes deeper.

Take a look at the draft and free agent history of the Panthers in the Fox era. Outside of Keyshawn, is there anyone much that fits the "big personality" mold? None I can recall. Flip it around and take a look at some of the personalities on Ditka's Bears, or even Turner's Chargers. You'll see a bit of a difference.

Attitude-wise, just about any coach would rather have a Nick Goings than a Jeremy Shockey. Some coaches, however, are able to deal with a Shockey type player. Some try, and fail. Others don't try. I'd put Fox in that final category. I think he generally avoided that type of guy, and I can think of at least one player who developed a "big personality" in his time here (Kris Jenkins) and was sent packing.

I don't think Rivera's afraid of taking on that sort of guy.

Again, whether that's good or bad is a matter of opinion.

The 'Taking plays off' thing is a farce. Every player has to take plays off at some point, otherwise they are going 100% for around 90 minutes. That's not physically possible. It's also completely subjective and generated purely from people's bloated expectations of what sack totals he should achieve.

The noise he made was by his agent more than him and there was nothing we could do to, 'sweep it under the rug', as he wasn't anything to do with the organisation.

I love how the majority of people start chastise Peppers for wanting to play elsewhere despite him being the consummate pro for his entire career

Ok... poo talk aside... his contract amount, ALONE is enough to call him a Diva. He obviously thinks he has the best skill as a DE in the game to attempt to negotiate a contract that high.

And he is awesome... hell I have his Panther's jersey... but when you make it more about the money and talk poo about your team, you're a diva.

So for being one of the best DEs in the game, he should accept less money otherwise he is a diva?! You do realise the vast majority of players don't even get involved with contract talks, just leaving it to their agents?

That's why rookies often call their agent to say 'enough is enough' when they are on the point of hold out.

What 'poo' did he basically say? There has been a lot said from a lot of places about the demise of the Fox regime, he had been in it for the longest so it's reasonable to think he had just had enough of the style?

“The problem that I had was that they tried to turn the tables to make it look like I wanted out, no matter what. And really, I didn’t have the option to stay because it was never offered to stay. So that’s the thing when I say it ended a little sour, I felt like it could have been a little more respectful.

“At least a phone call to say, ‘Hey, it’s been good. We’re going a different direction. We’re going to let you go.’ They couldn’t even give me that. So that’s why I say it was a little sour.”

In an interview last week, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said the Panthers twice made Peppers offers to make him the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player.

Being not just the highest paid DE, but the highest paid player period, in 2009 and talking poo on the way out = Diva. He also went on to say Jake Delhomme got a "raw deal".

The higest paid player... period...

Was his performance the best in the league? Hell no.

And he talked poo.

Diva.

Johnson was Dan Henning's idea, acquainted from his Jet days. Didn't work out so well. Hoping this one goes better.

Again, I still think that guys with criminal records or thuggish personas are off-limits, but the "attitude" guys may now be welcome.

You have a really warped view of pretty much everything it seems.

I can't believe you hold it against him with regards to how much he got. Much like with inflation, player saleries were escalating year after year. Before his contract Freeney got the biggest contract for a DE ever, Allen before him. Amazingly these contracts happened in a succession of years, almost as if they dictated each other. How odd...

Just what exactly, that he said, that offends you so much? He wasn't even bad mouthing the organisation, just felt that at the end things could have been handled better. Considering Pep had been with us for 9 or so years, you would have thought we actually would have called him... This was exemplified by the send off that Jake Delhomme got.
