Drafting a QB #1 is a Smokescreen

does it really matter about the damn tenders? All of those are going to go in the garbage once the CBA is reached.

So why tender Moore? Doesn't make a bit of sense if you are really looking for a franchise QB. I think it is more telling than simply securing a back up QB. They intend to let Moore compete for #1 spot, otherwise, drop the guy and stick with Clausen and your #1 draft pick. What exactly is a #1 draft pick going to learn from Moore, who has been a back up his entire career?

I think the tender means a lot more than people are recognizing.

why single out moore?

the panthers tendered everyone who was going to hit fa.

the tenders are nothing more than a "just in case" measure. if they get nullified by the new cba, then no big deal. but if they don't...

What about this does nobody seem to understand? "smokescreens" don't work when you have the number one overall pick. Why would a team trade up WITH us in order to PICK the player WE made them think WE really wanted????

A successful "smokescreen" only really works when want a particular player to fall to you. For example you tell people you want player A so everyone ahead of you knows that player A won't go past your position. This makes them not consider player B who you actually want.

Also, why would we start a "smokescreen", however unrealistic, two months before the draft? No pro days, no personal interviews...come on guys. This isn't a conspiracy...it's not a ploy...the Panthers need a QB and are looking at newton and gabbert. That's it...nothing more nothing less.

close thread...

Tendering moore means the same thing that tendering marshall means. we don't really like these guys but since we don't have a CBA we should probably lock them up because we might not get FAs. We're playing it safe.

I do think that the Panthers are trying to get a trade partner unfortunatley...

no team is going to trade up to number 1 for a QB

the fans and media are drooling over 2-3 QBs in the draft, but the fact of the matter is this draft is deep in quality QBs. so deep that a good one can be picked up as deep as the 3rd round. all of them have question marks, and all of them are projects. so what's the purpose of reaching for one first overall?

Newton and Gabbert are not #1 draft picks. ESPN knows this, mock draft geeks know this and most fans know this. If the Panthers stretched and took one of these guys #1 overall then the Panther's would have paid too much, because these guys shouldn't go #1 overall, period.

Now, if Buffalo has #3, Cincy has #4, Zona has #5 and all three of these teams are desperate for a QB, which they are, then making them believe that the Panther's would actually use the #1 pick on Newton or Gabbert, makes those teams more eager to move up. The smokescreen part is, neither of these 2 Qbs are worth the #1 pick, but if the Panther's can convince these teams that they will use the #1 on a Qb, if a trade doesn't occur, then 1 of these teams may just pull the trigger and trade up with the Panthers.

I don't believe the Panthers intend to or will pick a QB with the #1 pick overall. There is too much at stake and they will take a safe pick, but they must make the other teams believe they will, inorder to have ANY chance of trading down.

didn't we tender Marshall & CJ Wilson? Does that mean no Peterson? Does tendering King/Rosario mean we won't upgrade TE? Does tendering/making offers to Landri, Hayden, and Ed Johnson mean we won't upgrade DT?

There are still options in the draft for all of these positions... So I do not think tendering Moore alone means no chance of a QB in the draft. No, the quarterbacks at the top of this draft are why its unlikely we take a QB.

I disagree that Gabbert and Newton are definitely not #1 draft picks, there is a very real possibility they could be. I don't want either of them but...

If a good quarterback is the most important spot on the field, then wouldn't a good quarterback be the most important position in the draft as well? I dunno.

.

If espn and mock draft geeks know it, then pro team scouts and front offices damn sure know it as well. Nobody is going to trade up.

You are pretty much saying that what we say about a player will affect how other teams view that player?

I'm sorry bu you are just grasping at straws...don't look to much into it, especially now.

Why tender Moore? All the other players tendered have value to the Panthers. What is Moore's value? With all the FA Qbs out there, do you think Moore would get picked up? Tendering him shows that you don't want to lose him. Why do we care if we lose him, if we are drafting a QB #1? We have Clausen who has 10 NFL starts, what's the point in carrying Moore who has 13 NFL starts? Is Moore really the veteran QB at this point?

Tendering Moore just in case, doesn't make sense, unless they really intend to keep him to compete against Clausen for the start. With Moore, Clausen, Pike, a potential FA and a #1 QB draft pick it gets really cloudy. Doesn't make sense that we really are drafting a QB #1, based on all the factors mentioned, including the Matt Moore tender.

Maybe I'm fishing, but I don't see us drafting a Qb #1.

i don't see carolina taking a QB first overall either, but i swear people on the huddle read too much into everything.

again, carolina tendered EVERYONE.

i for one believe moore will be picked up by someone this offseason.

it would be more telling if they tendered everyone except moore.

Exactly. If we make teams believe we will take a player that they covet, Buffalo and Newton, then we may force their hand. It happens all the time.

I don't see the Panthers drafting a QB #1, but they can't let the rest of the NFL know that. If Luck were there, we would have already announced the #1 pick. Most teams that have the #1 pick make it known very early who they will pick. I seriously doubt anyone will know the #1 pick in this years draft before it's announced. I also seriously doubt that if the Panthers pick #1 overall, then a Qb will be selected, unless a trade is already been worked out with Buffalo, Cincy or Zona.

But it also keeps us from having to commit to a multi-year deal with a free agent QB. This is a one year tender. It is perfect if you are intending on drafting and developing a QB for one year.

If they TRULY loved Matt they would give him a 3 year extension.

I know the CBA plays into that also but don't read too much into the tender

Why did they tender Keith Null?

the Bradford deal went down just a couple of weeks before the draft.

If we did announce who the pick was going to be it wouldn't be until after all the pro days etc.
