I almost gave my mom a stroke I begged her for their tape so bad

I eventually got it and wore it out. Good band

I listened to August and Everything After, Recovering the Satellites and their live album, non stop as a teen. Seriously, I was obsessed. Such good albums.

Not arguing...just stating opinion.

I personally think the 80s were probably one of the greatest generations of music in the past 3-4 decades. 50s were awesome ...60s was awesome...70s were blah except for Stones, Bee Gees, Beatles, etc.. Then the 80s come along and you've got MJ, Prince, Madonna, wide assortment of rock bands in popular music, ballads, rap starting out (Run DMC pwned and unfortunately so did Easy-E which lead to the degeneration of rap), Billy Joel/Huey Lewis styles, Men at Work, Genesis, tons of stuff. Then the nothing came.

Years went by while we're sitting waiting...listening to AC/DC Back in Black or Whitesnake...then we're blessed with the rebirth with Nirvana/Pearl Jam.

Honestly...80s kicked butt. Nowadays, outside of a couple of standouts (Buble, Linkin Park, and a few others) it's become an electronic rehash. Gaga stands out...but even she's guilty of it. Listen to "Born this way" and play Madonna's "Express yourself" at the same time.

I was 14 or 15 when August and everything after came out. Adored that album but never got into any other albums. probably the whole teenage angst thing.

This reminds me to add "Round Here" to my new bands song list, thanks!

Think I was about the same age.

Murder of One is one of my favorite songs ever.

OK I'm going to stfu about the counting crows :)

edit: You should listen to the Round Here version on Across the Wire (not the acoustic one though it's good too) It's amazing!

Stop telling me I think that these bands are bad. I specifically said that they were not.

But seriously, Nirvana? I agree they changed music and brought rock back from the dead after Guns N Roses and all the hair bands killed it. But Groehls Foo Fighters has a lot better writing, sound, and every other technical part heads over heels better than Nirvana.

The mid 80's effectively killed music as a truly life changing experience, and by the time rock had made a comeback, digital music had replaced the idea of CDs/albums - why buy and experience the bands actual train of thought when you can pay 99 cents to get the hit, play it to death and move on to the next one?

In the late 70's/early 80s an album release by say, the Police, would be something a bunch of us would plan to be at when the store opened, then we would take it back home and listen to it - intently - and discuss. You didn't even have to be a real hardcore fan for this; Pink Floyd albums were particularly famous for this.

Now I see my daughter downloading songs of the week to play on her phone with the crappy earbuds, and this is the way most people listen to music - it's a silence filler while you are driving or looking at Facebook.

Yes I'm a grumpy old man, but I have a reason for it. A lot of younger people really don't know what they have given up for instant access to music.

I just feel dirty agreeing with you.
