How will CBA impact Panther Pick?

There are indications that suggest this could be a long lockout. The top quarterback prospects are projects, not ready to start, according to most opinions I have read and I agree. If the season begns in September after an abbreviated mini camp and shortened preseason, it is probably safe to assume that the developmental prospect will be certainly parked in 2011.

His rookie season, for all intents and purposes, becomes 2012 because it will be the first time through OTAs, off-season skull sessions and workouts, and intense, repetitive drills to refine mechanics.

It is possible that a developmental QB drafted in 2011 would not be ready until 2013. His contract will most likely be for 4 years, and it could be that he becomes a UFA, depending on CBA outcomes.

Should not the very real possibility of this happening influence the Panther's decsion to use the top pick, one that is likely to cost $50 million, to basically train a player to play NFL QB?

Would it not be smarter to bring back Moore, sign a veteran, continue developing Clausen and Pike, and draft a non-qb who will be ready to go when it is time to go? Then if the QB spot is still a train wreck in 2012, draft a QB then?

I don't think it will impact the Panthers pick. The CBA is going to impact free agency the most. The only way it will impact the Panther's pick is if they decided to grab someone in the draft because they are not able to fill that need in free agency. I don't think that will be the case because the Panthers are in a rebuilding mode and 2011 is not a make or break season.

On another note, we will have football in 2011. Once the players quit receiving pay checks they will crack. It is looking like this thing is going to the court system which will take years to resolve. Players that have short careers plus mansions and Porsches to pay for will not win this stand off.

jtm, some think Doty will not put two injunctions in place. The fact he put an injunction against them with the TV money was big, but to do a 2nd stopping the lockout would be surprising.

I didn't read the whole decision but I don't think he issued an injunction. Instead, he said that the plaintiffs did not argue that money damages could not compensate the victims. Not trying to get into a legal discussion, but you cannot get an injunction unless you prove that $ cannot compensate for your loss. Doty ordered a future hearing to determine this but no injunction.

My point is, the players will crack once they quit getting pay checks. I don't care how strong their case is - this will not get resolved via the court system by September. Where I live it is close to 2 years to get a case on the docket.

I suppose in a nutshell, with the amount of $ we are talking about going to the #1 pick, there could be a different perspective on the brink of a lockout. In a normal situation I would take the best player/biggest need, but the #1 pick is a huge investment compared to other picks. but it would seem that to draft a player who needs work and not be able to work with him would cause the player to drop on our board. You could lose 25-50% of his ability to play out his contract. If you draft a player who is ready to play, he probably will be after the lockout and you get all 4 years out of him. I would consider this if I were a GM, but there are so many variables.

Does anyone know how the CBA (or lack there of) will impact players signed in this draft? I mean from the perspective of a rookie cap which is one of the few things that both sides agree on. The articles online are wildly inconsistent and curious to see if anyone knows the deal.

Let's say there is no agreement reached prior to the 2011 draft. Does this mean that rookies are grandfathered into the "old" CBA or will there be no cap?

I brought this up several days ago and postulated the same thing. I tend to agree with you that if the CBA isn't done until June or the start of training camp, our draft picks would get no work or practice. At a skill position like quarterback this would be potentially disasterous. Anyone we drafted would be on a steep learning curve throughout camp and the preseason. The likelihood they would be able to play and contribute very much in 2011 would be small compared to their initial cost. We would be much better off picking a plug and play kind of position like corner or defensive lineman rather than a QB or even wide receiver.

The Panthers would have to believe that any quarterback they would choose is worth picking now and sitting for at least a year in order to draft one. Or they have to believe the CBA will be signed in the next 2 months. Given recent positive comments about Clausen and negative ones about the CBA, I have to believe that passing on a QB is a growing possibility.

1st overall picks sign 6-yr deals, not 4-yr deals. Any player they pick will not be allowed in the stadium until the new CBA is done.. and their 6-yr contract will not begin until the CBA is done.. so we will not train ANYONE until that CBA is done.

I don't think it will effect the Panthers pick at all. We will get all 6 years out of anyone we draft.

If there is a rookie salary cap the trade off will be that the contracts will be shorter on the order of 3 or 4 years so that a rookie can reasonably expect to get to his next contract and make a big payday. Or at least that is what is being speculated.

MHS me and some other guys on here (I think it was panther55) have disagreed with this some.

He agrees with you. I have contended that if the CBA isn't finalized by the draft it might actually increase our chances of drafting a QB.

The main reason is bc it will be the only way to control your own destiny in terms of who you bring in to compete with Clausen and Moore.

If there is no free agency before the draft and you pass. Then there is a chance that none of the big name QB's want to come here and be part of the rebuilding process.

In that scenario you go to camp with the same QB's you had last year. Considering our GM and coach have said that the QB position is a priority many fans would be miffed by no movement at that position. Even by drafting a QB that wasn't expect to play next year, fans would know there was some sort of direction for the future.

I have heard some people here say that the struggles in the passing game were not Moore or Clausen's fault. It was the sh*tty offense implemented by Davidson. I agree with that A LOT.

But as I said in another thread, even if that is true then Clausen and Moore made Jake Delhomme look like Joe Montana. So either those two guys really are that bad or Jake is just that good .

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
