What we know about the Top QBs at the Combine

Without throwing? Can't do it. Unless teams can get enough from film and pro day. Still a lot to gamble on with 1st overall.

Most every talking head and analyst I have read or hears since the combine says that 80% of the work is done before the combine. The other 20% is done at individual workouts teams have for top players. As such Newton and Gabbert are no different than they were before the combine. The combine is more a time for unheralded guys from small schools or a guy like Julio Jones who was not being considered in the top 5 to run up the boards. Reminds of what Chris Johnson did from ECU a few years ago.

What teams will be looking for newton in his pro day for example will be improvement in his footwork and timing once he is with his own receivers. They know he is raw but they want to see if he is coachable and picks things up.

Gabbert apparently did well on his interviews and people will be looking at his throwing and drills as well on his pro day.

If we are serious though about both of them, we will bring them in for a visit and see how they do with our drills. Might even bring in a few defenders to see how they do under pressure. Might stress them to see how well they do when things aren't controlled or easy.

Then we will get an idea of whether either of them are worthy of a top pick.

I see it this way: Gabbert was rated #1 going into the combine. I expected Cam to knock the scouts' socks off and rise above the others. He didn't. I think Gabbert's plan worked. I would say he is clearly ahead of Newton and will probably remain there until his pro day. At that time, he seals the deal or blows it.

I was listening to Nfl Sirius and Jim Miller a former NFl quarterback was discussing that. He said things are no different before or after the combine regarding either Newton or Gabbert. Cam did well on the measurables as did Gabbert. He said the pressure was much higher on Cam than Gabbert given he was under a microscope every where he went. He said that most scouts and GMs he talked to didn't really change their mind about anything. Most of their decision making is done before the combine and pro day. The other 20% comes from interviews, and personal workouts. In fact what they would look at in newton's pro day was if he improved or not. If he has a good pro day then things are still equal if Gabbert does well also. He said that no one ever downgrades you because of a bad combine. It just helps those who are less known or came from small schools to move up the boards. Of the quarterbacks, he said that Jake Locker may have made the biggest move up.

I think we are fussing over players who are going to be someone else's future QB. Locker had a lot to gain, considering how far he has fallen. I have never seem his good side. Gabbert has some bad film. Newton is very raw, and could be a stud, and I think about him in Panther black and consider the possibilites. Either he will be great or he will be terrible. I fear the variables pulling him to the dark side.

Hard to know at this point. If Richardson brings them both in, I bet we will get a feel about where they are in the FOs eyes. Should make for an interesting next few weeks,

Colin Kaepernick surprised me the most. I remember watching him play against Boise state and I thought the kid could play. He wasn't a good passer until this year but now I think he has a good shot at being a decent NFL Qb. I know he will be a late round pick but he could end up being a steal for the team that picks him.

I want to know what Mallets speed is, he didn't run which makes me think he decided not to run because he is slow but he is Taller and weighs more than Cam and has a better arm but yet Cam is projected to go way before Mallett. Mallet is a qb I would love to see us get I mean he has great size and he had great stats while playing in the toughest conference in college football. I would love to see us trade down and use a second round pick on the kid but I don't see it happening.

I agree. And I can tell you that I was also surprised by Ponder's speed and hand size.

Colin Kaepernick threw harder than Mallet (read that he had the throw with the highest velocity, which is consistent with the scouts at the Senior Bowl.

I would also add that Cam did nothing at the combine to hurt himself, but he should have done a lot to help himself. I was surprosed that the other QBs are about as athletic as he is. A guy under the microscope like he was cannot be compared fairly to the others. He was probably shaken from the interviews and press conferences. I still do not want him, but the reasons are not due to his passing performance or even his icon comment.

Oh, and Mallett is about as unathletic as they come from the arms down.

Like you, I like Ponder, a lot. If we had a second round pick, I think he would be a good one there.

There is something about him, he seems to always be within himself and he is very accurate...big hands usually means better control of the football.

Add 2" in height and he would be a keeper.

Who is to say what will happen.

Some things can't be measured. Brady was totally unimpressive in college, not even impressive enough to start, not impressive at the combine, and yet, he is a winner. It could be the system that he is in fits him or maybe he just grew into who he was suppose to be. The Patriots got lucky and sometimes, better lucky than good.

I think Gabbert's performance makes Cam's athleticism less significant, so whilst Cam did nothing to hurt his stock, Blaine closed the gap in physical prowess.

So physically there isn't quite as much as people believe, however the consensus amongst scouts is that Blaine is the better passer (I haven't seen Blaine play so can't comment).

I think this is b.s. Just because the other guys have similar numbers does not mean they are as fast on the field. Having similar times doesn't show how a player breaks tackles or their field vison.

Isn't this a better argument for a running back?

not really a fan of any QB, so feel free to take this as a general statement..

but I'm not so concerned with my QB breaking every tackle as I am with him having the speed to get to the edge for 10 yards if there is room enough..

I want Aaron Rodgers more than I want Ben Rothlisberger..
