Some things to think about with Drafting Project QB's

Yes, and the reason why is we are not a SB team right now. We are 2 or 3 years away from that goal. If they keep good on there promise and build from the draft then they need a QB that will fit there system. We should look at Tampa Bay and see that that's what they were committed to and that we should do the same. I dont expect to win a lot of games to start with but I expect to build on the year before.

My question is this? How many FA QBs do you know that turned out to be Fran QBs?

Also if we do not draft a QB this year. How many people are readly to go 1-16 again? At best we could only win 2 games to promise us a Fran QB in next years draft.

and lastly how many people are ready to wait 10 years for a QB in the late rounds to turn out to be that guy?

Many of you (myself included "sometimes") are deadset on the Panthers drafting someone like Cam Newton of Gabbert from Missu. Both of these guys have been presented with the "give them a year of 2" mind set.

The problem in this is, the same damn people that are talking about drafting them often speak of "We need to WIN NOW!!" and "We NEED A Franchise QB NOUWWW!!!!" etc. How exactly are we to get this in a player that is projected as someone who needs to learn how to be a NFL QB ?

How long are you willing to let Newton or Gabbert sit behind a Billy Volek or some such?

Much of Arron Rodgers success (many believe) has to do with sitting comfortably behind a HOF Qb. He got several season of running 2nd team offense against the Packers starting D. He got a system installed and stable for him to learn for a few seasons. He also got a talented team built around him and Retirment??!??Brett for him to step into.

Where the Panthers are as a team is somewhere we haven't been in many seasons. Fox flat refused to play rookies until he was forced to. While this led to some competitive teams, it was poo for building for the future. Once JR but foot to ass and said win of GTFO Fox and Hurney poo the bed trading the future for temporary job saving draft picks. Luckily, that is at an end and we are building with youth, developing our picks, and trying to establish consistancy.

So the final question, are the Panthers in the right spot for to develop a project QB ?

We are going to have a project QB no matter what whether we are the right spot isn't the pertinent question. You addressed it in a post though. The question is whether Clausen is that guy. If he is then you don't draft a Qb at all. If he isn't then you need to draft one this year and get the process going. If you don't know then you still draft one and hope that between the two of them you get lucky with one of them.

That is why you still need to get a veteran who can fill the gap while the rookies learn. Game experience is needed but much of the work that a guy like Gabbert or Newton needs can be done in practice every day.

Dont we already have a project QB in jimmy clausen?

But the question is whether you beleive Clausen has the potential to be a franchise guy or not.

I don't buy this argument. Is there anyone here who truly believes that either Gabbert or Newton wouldn't step in immediately and be better than Clausen?

How is improving the most important position on your squad "reaching"?

They could put your grandmother in at QB and be better than clausen. That really doesnt say too much.

Some things to think about when Drafting Project QB's

1. When will the 6th round get here, this 3 day poo is ridiculous

2. We have to pick someone in the 7th, quick throw a dart at our draft board.

3. Which guy can we draft that no one else will claim when we try and put them on the PS?

4. Who is really tall but has no other discernible QB skills?

5. Who has a big arm with no other discernible QB skills?

6. Who is really fast with no other discernible QB skills?

Understand that unless you are refering to Armanti Edwards as the 2nd Qb we are developing you are out of your mind. :)

Tony Pike doesn't have the goods.

Anytime a team loses a QB and doesn't miss a beat tells me the system makes the QB -> See Cinn Bearcats when pike was hurt.

He might be a great backup but has no starting potential.

You may be right, but in fairness we can't judge Pike by last year either.

Is there anyone here who truly believes that either Gabbert or Newton wouldn't step in immediately and be better than Clausen?

Yes.

Clausen may not be a great QB, but he has a year's worth of experience actually playing at the pro level. One training camp and a few preseason games isn't going to be enough to get a couple of kids who haven't even played in a pro style offense up to speed.

Let's be real here.

Is this a pro Carson Palmer thread?

It ought to be.

I don't expect or think we are in "win now" mode. We shouldn't be. We do have the talent to compete now with a solid QB, but I'm all about the long-term with this pick. It's why I don't mind waiting a year or two for Newton to develop.
