Some things to think about with Drafting Project QB's

I disagree salty. :( He showed nearly complete ineptitude. Projects usually have very high natural talent but need refining. But if they play they will show flashes of brilliance based on their talent alone. Clausen did not do anything.

I know im just trying to make myself feel better about picking him last year. Project sounds better than bust.

*waits for the but clausen was playing behind a shitty olline and a lame duck coach comeback posts*

That very well may be true.

But, you are also assuming that he wants to hancuff hismelf to a player like Newton or Gabbert....even though both have HUGE ???. Neither Gabbert or Newton may be the kind of player that Rivera sees building a franchise around. If so, it soule be monumentally stupid to draft one of the #1 just because they are the best QB in this crappy draft.

Better to take the best athlete or player that can help you win now....put in a stop gap at QB...and live to draft a franchise guy another day.

I don't think anyone disagrees with this. We have said if he thinks he can be that guy he will fight hard to take him.

The other thing is, if you put in the stop gap guy and you are picking 11-20 and you likely will still need a QB; then you likely will have even more ??? about that guy than the 2 guys this year.

so you draft the Project QB, do horribly the next year and take another QB?

I agree that he played like crap last season. And, I do not think poor coaching or OLine play was the only reason....or maybe even the biggest reason.

However, I would like to see if he can do anything once he is out from under the inpept playcalling and coaching of Davidson. Just interested to see if the boy has anything in the tank.

I would venture to say that right now is the best time we have had in over a decade to take on a project. Rivera has probably a two year honeymoon so we can afford some lumps as long as we are heading in the right direction. So if you take a QB that needs some time now is the time to do it, because next year is too late. If you draft a QB next year he better be read to go right away.

Rivera has a 4 year deal. Even if he drafts a QB next year, he still has three seasons left.

Understand that unless you are refering to Armanti Edwards as the 2nd Qb we are developing you are out of your mind. :)

Tony Pike doesn't have the goods.

Anytime a team loses a QB and doesn't miss a beat tells me the system makes the QB -> See Cinn Bearcats when pike was hurt.

He might be a great backup but has no starting potential.

But, you are also assuming that he wants to handcuff himself to a player like Newton or Gabbert....even though both have HUGE ???. I was really disappointed in Cam's combine work.

It was really his chance to kill some doubts about his passing ability.

Him missing guys in shorts scares the poo out of me.

If he BLOWS away his pro-day then I would feel a little better.

RR drafting Newton or Gabbert right now seems a lot like putting your life savings on Red at the Roulett wheel.

Using Tony Pike as an example of why we shouldn't draft a QB is like using RJ Stanford as an example of why we shouldn't draft a corner.

They went 19 picks apart (204 -> 223) and showed about the same thing.

I completely understand this position, its where I was at for a while. My thing is though when you consider the clusterf*ck at the top of the board and the QBs in the Free Agency, we are in the same position if either scenario works out poorly. Consequentially, we end up with another high draft pick. Probably not #1 again (CBA pending), but the difference is:

Scenario 1: We'll have Clausen and another young QB that even though have played very poorly, are only a year in and could be potential trade bait for a WCO

Scenario 2: We'll have Clausen and an old Vet QB worth nothing who didn't play well. We'll most likely have a huge upgrade on D from whoever we picked up at 1, but the offense is still poor. We probably will settle for Barkley or someone along those lines in 2012 unless we trade the whole team for Luck.

I'd rather take the shot now rather than waiting another year hoping some guy like Barkley is our man of the future. We have the #1 pick in the draft & have more options than any other team on what to do, who to get, or where to trade down.

When it comes down to it, we still got a while before the draft & before the CBA is figured out, so I will fully support whoever Rivera and Hurney decide upon. I just don't see them going after Volek and saying: "Alright, we're set for 2011!". Maybe a trade is on the horizon, I dunno, but from this perspective it makes sense why people think they may go QB at #1.

My personal opinion on QB:

I want either Kaepernick, Ponder, or Stanzi if they fall to the 3rd or 4th. Much less of a risk and we will have already drafted an impact player Peterson/Dareus/Green at number one (they have as much upside as Gabbert or Newton imo). I mean, the Packers selected Brohm in the 2nd as a safety net if Rodgers turned out bad...how'd that turn out? Well, Brohm sucked, but Rodgers is pretty much the king of the league right now. I may be biased, but this draft could have a lot of major sleepers and the QB class (considering the amount of guys coming from a spread system) could be very surprising in the end.
