Some things to think about with Drafting Project QB's

Many of you (myself included "sometimes") are deadset on the Panthers drafting someone like Cam Newton of Gabbert from Missu. Both of these guys have been presented with the "give them a year of 2" mind set.

The problem in this is, the same damn people that are talking about drafting them often speak of "We need to WIN NOW!!" and "We NEED A Franchise QB NOUWWW!!!!" etc. How exactly are we to get this in a player that is projected as someone who needs to learn how to be a NFL QB ?

How long are you willing to let Newton or Gabbert sit behind a Billy Volek or some such?

Much of Arron Rodgers success (many believe) has to do with sitting comfortably behind a HOF Qb. He got several season of running 2nd team offense against the Packers starting D. He got a system installed and stable for him to learn for a few seasons. He also got a talented team built around him and Retirment??!??Brett for him to step into.

Where the Panthers are as a team is somewhere we haven't been in many seasons. Fox flat refused to play rookies until he was forced to. While this led to some competitive teams, it was poo for building for the future. Once JR but foot to ass and said win of GTFO Fox and Hurney poo the bed trading the future for temporary job saving draft picks. Luckily, that is at an end and we are building with youth, developing our picks, and trying to establish consistancy.

So the final question, are the Panthers in the right spot for to develop a project QB ?

Dont we already have a project QB in jimmy clausen?

Jimmy was "NFL ready" if you put a lot of faith in Charlie Weis and Draft Websites.

Whether he is a NFL QB or Flop is yet to be seen. To judge any player from the trainwreck that was 2010 is foolish I think.

I don't think he will recover here in Carolina, but Pickles could end up with a career.

Yes we are. We have a new coach, on a team that only won 2 games last year. The only expectations at all is to see improvement, which will happen with a veteran quarterback. So you let the vet QB play for a season, then the expectations become to contend for the NFCS. If the rookie QB, whom has a much high ceiling than vet QB, is ready, then you put him in and let him go.

I just don't think Rivera or Hurney have a lot of confidence in Clausen. All they have been talking about this off season is finding a franchise QB. I suppose there is a chance that is a smokescreen, like some believe, but I don't buy it.

If Jimmy Clausen is a project what would Luck have been?? I thought since he played in a pro system he was the most "pro ready" of the QBs last year. Now he is a project??

And even if projects are thrown into the fray too fast you would like to see some flashes. Anything. 2 of his three TD passes came at the end of blowouts if i remember correctly.

I would venture to say that right now is the best time we have had in over a decade to take on a project. Rivera has probably a two year honeymoon so we can afford some lumps as long as we are heading in the right direction. So if you take a QB that needs some time now is the time to do it, because next year is too late. If you draft a QB next year he better be read to go right away.

I don't think Rivera is willing to handcuff his head coaching career to Jimmy Pickles. I think he will go his own route like many other first time head coaches do.

That very well may be true.

But, you are also assuming that he wants to handcuff himself to a player like Newton or Gabbert....even though both have HUGE ???. Neither Gabbert or Newton may be the kind of player that Rivera sees building a franchise around. If so, it would be monumentally stupid to draft one of the #1 just because they are the best QB in this crappy draft.

Better to take the best athlete or player that can help you win now....put in a stop gap at QB...and live to draft a franchise guy another day.

im not looking at how he did in the collegiate level but how he did in his first NFL season. He played as bad as any project qb could have.

I disagree salty. :( He showed nearly complete ineptitude. Projects usually have very high natural talent but need refining. But if they play they will show flashes of brilliance based on their talent alone. Clausen did not do anything.

    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
