Narrowing down the #1 Pick

as I've said a million times, nobody was talking about Gabbert because nobody was expecting him to come out at ALL. He was still one of the top quarterbacks heading into this season (he was in the top 5 on a number of lists) People WERE talking about him earlier this year after he beat Oklahoma, but not a whole ton because his next two games were the worst he'd had. If you've watched Big 12 football you've been aware of him for a couple years. That does not mean you want him #1, but it probably means you realize why people think he's the best QB in the draft.

Gabbert is not out of shape. I'm not sure why people think that. Everything I have ever read about him has mentioned how hard he works, in the gym and elsewhere.

I do like Gabbert. I do think he is one of the better prospects. But I think we have two projects on the roster, have other big holes, and shouldn't invest in another project right now.

I haven't heard about Gabbert being out of shape but compared to Newtons physical ability Gabbert isn't even close. I personally don't like Gabbert because of his experience and the lack of numbers he put up last year. That doesn't mean he won't be a successful NFL QB because Matt Ryan didn't have a great senior year.

Newton is obviously physically nuts, but Gabbert is not far behind.

I agree stats in college have limited meaning. I also understand people's hesitation with Gabbert. I personally think he has the commitment and the football IQ to transition well.

I will reiterate this. Gabbert was suppose to be the #1 overall pick NEXT season.. but he came out early. Luck was suppose to be the #1 pick this season.. so they essentially switched draft classes. Which is why Gabbert was not on anyone's radar this season.

Exactly. Well. I don't know about #1, but he was going to be vying for that spot next year.

I don't know enough about the DT prospects, and I really get a weird feeling about taking a DT. I personally like AJ Green & PP the most but I don't think they are the biggest need, DT is.... Behind QB, of course, where I don't think we'll find our answer this year.

Tom Condon represented QB's do not throw at the combine, it's really as simple as that.

Yes, Condon works for him but who really thinks he's going to go against the advice of one of the most respected agents in the industry?

That being said, I want Dareus.

I would not be upset if we got Dareus.. the guy is a stud.. and I believe will be an impact player from the beginning. If we do take Qb.. it better be Gabbert.. that's all I have to say. I like Fairley's upside, but I don't think he will ever have the motivation to tap it. Dareus is my pick if we go Dline.

Agreed but I think taking a DT with the first pick would be dumb considering the depth in this draft at DT. I would love to get Green but we need a QB and DT and TE more than a WR. Not having a 2nd round pick really hurts because we could get a really talented player with that pick and because of the CBA trading will be more difficult. Our front office has some tough decisions that will determine the success of our franchise for years.

Check out this website so you can see upcoming draft prospects.

I could live with Marcel Dareus or Patrick Peterson as the #1 pick if we can't trade down. With a rookie pay scale, the scary pay day won't be there which makes it financially feasible to draft CB at #1.

Marcel Dareus though... that's a lot of man to be moving the way he was moving. How did Sapp describe him? A bowling ball of butcher knives?

If the team can't trade down I'm blaming Fiz, or can we blame Clausen/Hurney for everything still?

Lout the problem I have with your list is that you only list reasons why we SHOULDN'T pick certain guys, I would hope that there's some positive reasons to pick one of your top 3 too. I agree that Gabbert should very much be on the radar. The only reason you haven't heard the FO talk about him is that everyone's so fixated on Cam.

I used deducive reasoning on this post. There are positive's to the 3 top prospects, and I touched on those with Peterson at the bottom. I touched a little on Dareus, but not much on Gabbert.

Mainly what I would say positively about Gabbert is, he is a protypical size QB at 6'4 245lbs, he has big hands at 10", so fumbling and seeing over the Oline will not be an issue like Jimmy Pickles. Gabbert's arm is very strong, and even more accurate. His release is the quickest in YEARS. His release is up there with Tony Romo's.. who has an ultra quick release. Gabberts intangibles are not in question.. his leadership is reknowned throughout his locker room.. whereas there was a major question about Jimmy Pickles leadership coming out. Gabbert can put the ball where only his player can get it and his decision making is somewhat errant at times because he likes to take some risks and trusts his arm a little too much.

Gabbert has worked with a personal trainer working on pro-style offense since he was 16.. so 3, 5, 7 step drops will not be an issue whatsoever, like most spread QBs coming out of college. His mechanics are impeccable. His transition from spread to pro-style will be seamless for the most part. He will just need to learn how to read defenses in his drop, which he hasn't done since high school. From a pure spread to pro-style comparison, Gabbert is ahead of Sam Bradford and other former rookie QBs coming out.

The #1 prediction IMO is still trading the pick for more picks.

Newton is no longer a factor after his Combine/interviews.

Fairley's 40-time was awesome, but he is only 6'3" and still carries the baggage of the label of 'cheap shot artist'.

Dareus is being argued as a better DT, but he is reportedly a better fit for a 3-4.

Green would be a great investment but nothing more until we fix the QB situation.

Trade, Bowers, Peterson, Green, Fairley/Dareus, that's my prediction heirarchy at this point. (That and $5 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks...)
