Narrowing down the #1 Pick

I am confused. Is this is a thread about who we will pick or who we should pick.

Rivera said we will interview 7-10 guys so this list is too short. Plus to not even have newton on the list is ridiculous. Seems a lot of work for nothing since without talking to Hurney or his staff all these deductions are even worth debating.

Just my opinion.

Please add something informative to the thread. I mentioned several reasons why Newton should not be the pick over Gabbert. Why don't you dispute those?

I think you need to add Bowers to the short list.

If we are going to draft a QB I think it will be Gabbert, he's more ready to play in the NFL at this moment and doesn't have any of the character red flags Newton does.

Behind QB, our most pressing need is DT, so I think Marcell Dareus has to be a frontrunner for the # 1 overall pick... he's not as flashy as Fairley but doesn't have as many of the character red flags either.

If we can't re-sign Charles Johnson, then DE runs to the front of our needs list. Right now, I can't see it as the TOP need. But, I see your point.

Cam Newton bought a stolen labtop not stole a labtop, unless you know something the cops don't. Also he was not expelled from UF nor has anyone said he was forced to leave or be expelled.

Thank you for pointing that out. The red flags still apply though. I just had the story wrong.

If your picking between Gabbert or Newton, Newton is the safer pick. While he has a lot to work on we dont know what monsters lie beneath with Gabbert. Him not throwing shows he had something to hide.

I have yet to hear any draft guru say that Newton is a 'safer pick' than Gabbert. Gabbert did not throw at the combine because Tom Condon doesn't allow his clients to throw.. not because they have something to hide. Did Sam Bradford, Matt Stafford, Peyton and Eli Manning have something to hide too?

I dont think it's a huge deal, but if he did't know it was stolen why would he toss it out of the window? They cops were in his room, inquired about it, stepped out to make a call and then he tossed it. That pretty much proves some level of stupidity, especially when he panted CAM on it.

Bradford and Stafford were hurt. The kid is coached up and his just riding the hype wave. Why would his agent want to hurt that?

Yup and even with CJ you need two DE's who are capable of getting to the QB on a consistent basis, it's much easier to find help at DT then it is at DE.

It's hurting your Cam case that you have to bash the other QB for things that aren't real.

Each has their own positives and negatives. Just because you don't know what Gabbert's are, doesn't mean you get to take something that isn't true and post it in every thread.

Russell Lande made a good point on WFNZ this morning... if the QB is the most important postion, then the next most important postion is the guy who can get to the QB, put him on his back, change the way he throws, etc... that was his logic for his guess that we will take Bowers # 1 overall.

DT is a big need, but it's much easier to address that position than to find an effective pass rusher. Jury is still out on Brown and Hardy, CJ is the only known commodity we have at DE and we might lose him to FA, so taking Bowers and then picking up a DT in a later round or via FA may be the way to go. Even if we retain CJ, you really need more than one effective pass rushing DE, otherwise they can just roll protection to the one DE who is a legit pass rush threat.

you could argue that the second most important position is also the guy who's job it is to protect that most important player from getting hurt, IE, the O-line.

I don't understand the jury being still out on Charles Johnson. He had a dominant year with absolutley no help along the line. He was arguably the best DE in the league last year. He has always produced in the years he was used in the rotation.

u can rush the passer all u want but when u have a cheaper alternative in a dt than some of the free agents u draft him. A qb can always step up in the pocket over and over again if u have nobody in the middle to contain him.

That's true, but very few QB's in the league are effective at climbing the pocket... most of them would rather escape outside.

It's also important to consider that enough outside pressure will create interior gaps that give the DT's more space to work and a staple of the 43 zone-blitz scheme is using LB's and safeties to blitz up the middle and create interior pressure.
