Wonderlic and QB's

Cultural bias has nothing inherent to do with race or IQ. It is western cultural bias to assume that things are written left to right or that a toggle switch on position is up. In China people read right to left and in Europe the toggle switch on position is down.

Most of these biases relating to testing are not racial but often socio-economic and experiencially based.

It still tests brain speed which is needed for say QB and RBs and not so much for WRs and DTs.

At what point did it ever become racist to make an observation that the bottom three QB's are all black?

I think the cultural emphasis for blacks on athletic accomplishment over academic accomplishment is to blame. The glorification that exists there. With your typical two parent middle to upper class white kids, they're force fed academics just as much if not more than athletics even after they've shown a certain ability there. Black minds are not encouraged to cultivate that talent as much as white minds are. There are tons of reasons we could get into but this isn't a sociology course.

When I was in Tallahasse, I helped to tutor FSU & FAMU players from time to time. I had to take the Wonderlic & it really isn't hard at all but the time factor screws with some people.

Sounds right to me. I would guess "automatic" thinking factored with intelligence is the whole point of the test.

And now you know why I regretted even opening this box. I guess my response would be when did you become so racist to believe that all black families put emphasis on athletic achievement over academic achievement and middle class to upper class white kids are force fed academics.

Have you seen Paris Hilton or Nicole Ritchie and the hundred other dimwitted white people around the US that get a pass bc of the wealth of their families. I don't think Paris Hilton was force fed academics.

For two years I went to school in the richest district in my county (Wake) and I can assure you these kids were not being force fed academics.

But that wasn't even my point. My point was the discrepancy of black QB at the bottom of that list that turned out to be good to great NFL QB's. There are two MVP down there. The white QB's had less successful QB's at the bottom of that list.

But in your eagerness to jump into a reverse racism tangent you missed the larger point.

My original post was supposed to be a little tongue in cheek. I removed it to avoid garbage like this.

It is. It's just that while the person might be able to make an automatic decision during a game (or meeting, presentation etc...) they hesitate with a test.

Neither Manning nor Brady scored near the top half and they are two of the greatest QB's of all time.

McNabb's score surprised me since I've always considered him to be a very intelligent guy... but there are different kinds of intelligence.

I don't think it's racist, I just think it's going to take this thread to a place none of us wants to go.

That's actuaclly not surprising, when you think about it. I wonder if there's a way to adjust for that hesitation in a testing environment.

Have you seen a wonderlic sample?

It takes a moron to fail it.

But you also have to take the situation into account.

It's one thing to take a sample test in the comfort of your own home (heck, even taking the real thing in an office/testing center), and quite another at the combine.

At the combine, they jump right into medical evaluation after medical evaluation, and sometimes even more intense testing if there is any kind of medical history that teams want to know more about, then get right to meetings, interviews, weighing, etc,...and at any given time, they can be pulled into a room to take the wonderlic.

I've read stories of guys who got pulled in just as they were getting ready to go eat lunch. So not only were they exhausted from all the poking and prodding of the morning, they weren't even given the opportunity to get re-energized by eating a solid meal before taking the test. And remember, pretty much all of these kids are already mentally worn down by the weeks of preperation, as well as having to deal with the nerves of interviewing for your lifetime dream job.

So basically, while the wonderlic can be a useful tool, you have to be careful of reading too much into the scores of these college kids. Heck, the scores could be radically different for a particular player depending on if they have to take it early, while they are still relatively fresh, or late when they are physically and emotionally shot.
