Mayock and Mora Jr. Say Panthers Need QB With #1 Pick

I thought so too....but his combine performance provided evidence to the contrary.

If your going to hold can only to the throwing part of the combine then you have to down grade Gabbert below all top QBs because he did not throw.

I downgrade all QB's because there isn't a QB in this draft even close to being worth #1 overall.

Another thing... seeing a lot of folks blame Cam's inaccuracy on not being familiar with the receivers.. if that's true, why were other QB's able to do just fine with those receivers? Time to stop making excuses for him and recognize that Cam is not worth the first pick, and will require a LOT of work to be even an average NFL quarterback. He may be the best QB in this class, but it's an exceptionally weak quarterback class. Next year's QB draft class will be much better(no, not just because of Andrew Luck, I've moved on from him being a Panther).

Cam wasn't the only one with accuracy issues, and some of those passes that were completed (by all the QB's), were actually bad throws that were completed only because there was no defender there to pick them off or bat them down. So the completion precentages people keep going on and on about are pretty much worthless. Almost none of the QB's were doing what they were supposed to do on the deep throws. Heck, the WR's weren't even doing what they were told half the time.

One thing which I am sure won't go down with those advocating Cam, is that during his apology he also admitted that he didn't appreciate the timing and variables involved with throwing at the combine. Again, he really shouldn't have been surprised and he certainly shouldn't admit that he was taken by surprise at how different it would be to throwing to his receivers.

Add in that he made a stupid mistake in an interview and he has made two small admissions that he hasn't been prepared for what was asked from him.

This is really picking at him, but he keeps doing these little things that make people go, 'huh?' I personally find him a pleasant enough guy, although I don't think he has the ability to deflect questions or come out with correct PR responses. It kinda annoys me, simply because he has had a lot of money thrown at him already, he should be surrounding himself with people who ensure he doesn't make these mental slip ups.

Disclaimer

I won't be upset/disappointed if we draft Cam. If we do draft him, it is proof enough for me that our FO think he is workable and that Clausen/Pike are not.

I get this. I really do.

I just feel we should be careful when we start parsing the words of a 21 year old kid who is nervous as sh*t because every syllable he speaks is being dissected for negatives.

Seasoned politicians that are 50 years old can't do it, why do we expect a 21 year old to do it??

Could he be cleaner with his responses? Absolutely. Could he be more PR? Sure.

My guess his handlers have told him, "Just be yourself. Because at the end of the day you what a team to draft you for who you are not who they think you are."

So I understand why some people feel the way they do, I would only hope we keep it in perspective.

What difference does it make if a QB is not used to the WR's he's throwing to at the combine anyway? When these guys get in the NFL, they will be doing scripted drills and running scripted plays with the same WR's every day...just like that media only workout Cam held, and just like they will all be doing when they have their pro days.

And as far as reading defenses goes, I would love to know how many times JC, who was said to have an elite football IQ by the scouts, actually completed passes to his 2nd or 3rd read. I doubt it happend more than 5-6 times in all the snaps he took for the Panthers.

It doesn't make a difference. The simple fact is Cam was not good this weekend. He was inaccurate, had horrible timing/touch, bad mechanics, you name it. It's something most of us expected to see based on what we saw from him in college football(not just highlight reels lol); that he is a high risk(I won't lie, high reward too) PROJECT pick. A lot of Cam fans keep making excuses for him like the guy is perfect and never makes mistakes. Is it that hard to take a step back and admit the guy needs a LOT of work to be a successful NFL quarterback?

Way too many question marks to be considered for #1 overall. Why not just get Vince Young? Comparable athlete? Yep. Much more dominant in college? You know it. Has actually won games in the NFL? Yep! Cost a #1 overall pick? NOPE.

combine is pointless......

Cam's biggest strengths as a QB weren't even on display. His ability to extend plays.....and make them with his legs is HUGE.

Cam could start week 1 for a team and we could start Clausen week 1......and I would be willing to bet Cam allows his offense to be more productive. Cam is a project....but he would be better than Clausen or Pike.

That is not the point and I am starting to see a trend with you :(

Nothing wrong with struggling with timing at the combine.

There is a problem saying that you were surprised that it would be an issue. Essentially he has admitted he wasn't as well prepared for it as he should have been, or basically saying he didn't expect it to be an issue before he started throwing.

You also need to stop saying, 'well such and such doesn't do it so it isn't a big issue'. News flash, sadly Clausen isn't the poster child for success as a young QB in the NFL. So saying that he hardly did it is irrelevant.

The point is, that to truly succeed, he will need to do this and coming from his simple offense at Auburn it is only accentuated. There is absolutely no evidence that he can even run a more traditional offense, let alone a complex one. Then add in that there is very little evidence of him making any consistent timing routes or reading underneath coverage to find the intermediate routes.

Essentially he is all potential. His running will be seriously scaled back due to his running style, so he will have to progress as a passer to succeed.

Lack of preparation (slip ups in interviews & not being prepared for timing issues) and little evidence of him as a passer scares me a lot. That said the FO will get closer to these guys than we ever will an as such will have a much better appreciation for the person, the player and the future of Cam Newton.

Starting him week 1 will be a huge mistake.

He will probably win a few games, but his development as a QB will be stunted, as he will be playing on instinct (to run) rather than on good practice.

Give him the first year off, get him working hard on his footwork, his preparation and the mental side of the game and he might be about ready in the 2nd year.

Look at any sport that requires certain skill sets (tennis, golf etc) and as soon as you are under pressure old tendencies start to creep in. this is only exemplified when you are making adjustments to your game, as you are thinking faster than your limited training can keep up. the result is the instincts coming in again.

He needs proper practice to be fed into his game so that it becomes his instinct, otherwise he will be tucking and running more often than not.

Dude, the only pass Cam even had a problem with, was the out, and his third one to the right side was a good throw, but the WR fell down coming out of his break, so it was incomplete. People are making waaaay too much out of this.

Nobody ever said that he makes no mistakes...we're saying that most of his mistakes are correctable because it's about 90% footwork, which he will be working on every single day during mini camps and TC.

I'm not saying that the Panthers will pick him either, but I'm positive that they are considering it more closely than some people seem to think, because they know that footwork and anticipating a throw can be mastered with repitition, but you can't teach JC to be taller, bigger, faster, or improve his arm strength.
