Mayock and Mora Jr. Say Panthers Need QB With #1 Pick

The thing that scares is if Cam falls to around 20 we will once again trade a future 1st round pick and another later pick to get him. I would rather take him #1 than that.

Hurney should be smart enough not to trade the 2012 1st when it could easily be the #1 overall if football isn't played in 2011.

Yeah, that is impressive for 14 games, but that's exactly my point. He really has only started and played for one season, then add to that the "red flags" with the NCAA stuff, King trying to destroy him at the combine...

Gabbert - What has he done? Period.

Bradford's only issues last year were injury concerns IIRC. Stafford didn't really have any concerns that I can recall... And they both had more proof on tape of what they were on the field compare to these guys.

Success in college has very little to do with success at the Pro Level, but you can't look at Newton's body of work as a player and not see how impressive he was in just one full season in the best, most competitive league in the country. More and more this idea that the type of offense you run in college is an indicator of how successful the transition will be to the Pros is losing credibility. I heard today that 2010 was the first year ever where more QB snaps were taken out of shotgun than under center. The NFL will not, as a whole, pass on a kid who's the size of a DE, can throw the ball a mile, won everything possible as a player in the SEC under intense scrutiny, and doesn't pull a Russell/Young on the Wonderlic.

Yeah, but usually every other year, there are several QBs who have a larger resume or more successful body of work than the top two candidates this year. There seems to be more questions than usual this year.

Mark Sanchez only started 16 games in college. He won 9 games in his only season as a full time starter, in a conference much weaker than the SEC, with more surrounding talent than what Auburn has. He also crumbled late during games, not being able to bring them back when they were down late in the game, until what Cam did this year. Sanchez went 5th overall, being the 2nd QB taken behind Matthew Stafford.

And none of that has ANYTHING to do with showing the skillset that is required of a top NFL QB.

He is a hell of an athlete. And was a beast in the specific offense that Auburn ran. But, that offense and the skills that he exhibited do NOT translate well to a top NFL QB.

As I have said, I am not saying that he can't or won't be good....just that he has a ton of ?? about his skillset that you and the other nut-huggers just discount.

Hye...Charlie Ward won the Heisman too.

You changed the conversation to skill set, not me. I said he had the most impressive resume possible for someone who played only one full season. You said his resume was a contradiction, which was wrong and dumb of you.

And that still doesn't change the fact that you seem to have completely missed the fact that the NFL is shifting to a 3-wide, shotgun set offensive league, one not all too dissimilar from the base-spread both Newton and Gabbert ran in college. If you haven't noticed, we went with the unquestioned most "NFL ready" prototype QB last year, and he was horrible. Other than probably Mallett, no one in this draft can make the throws these two can make, and no one has the size/speed combo either, so not only are you wrong about the resume, you're also wrong about the skill set argument as well.

Whoever drafts Newton will build their offense around him too. I guess the big question is whether or not Chud will want to adapt his scheme to the players, or draft players that only fit his scheme. I don't know anything about the guy, so I have no idea which way he prefers to do it.

He is a disciple of the Coryell offense.

I have to say that I like Cam Number 1 and i also like Dareus number 1 to. I think its more of how Ron Rivera is as a coach.I know he is a defensive coach and everything witch is good. But to be honest the panthers will never be succesful into we get that QB. Im kind of an Young old school guy what i mean by that is why do we have coaches for is to coach.Thats there job to coach. You cant expect players to come to the NFL and already be perfect or just catch on just like that. Dont get me wrong now some can and some cant.So if they are really serious about Newton they have to bring him in an design and Offense Attack for him.We Still have stewart so we will be running the Ball and Deanglo Willams will resign also.Unless they are planning on tradeing him.Thats the only way i will let him go. But back to Cam Newton if its time for people to start coaching then to keep talking. Build and Offense for him. Bring him along kind of slow.Giving him nice and Easy routes to throw, into he is able to be the man they need him to be. Its not like we are going to the superbowl next year. And If they really go that route trade Smith send him to a contender and pick up a second round pick.Smith really deserves better. I know i like Dareus i like Cam Newton to, He isnt a Andrew Luck or a Peyton Manning but he can be a Good NFL QB.

Newton has the potential to fit in that type scheme. Every year the # of QBs who played in pro systems in college is going to continue to get smaller and smaller......so at some point that will quit being held against kids.

That doesn't matter very much though. You can tweak any scheme to take advantage of a unique talent, and whoever drafts Cam Newton will do exactly that, if they're smart.

BTW, Husker is right. Even Peyton Manning took over 70% of his snaps from the shotgun last year, so the NFL is moving in that direction.

Peyton still takes his drops from the shotgun, he doesn't just stand there.

Cam would take the ball from the shotgun and shuffle his feet not really moving much then throw.

He still needs to work on his footwork no matter where he takes his snaps from.

Being in the gun all the time would eliminate the best asset of this team

The BIGGEST thing that concerns me about Cam is the one read and then run offense he was in. Not knowing whether he can go through 3-4-5 progressions within the 4-5 seconds he has in the pocket is a HUGE risk.

Again, these are just things that make me nervous about him.

If Hurney, Rivera, Shula think that he is the guy and we can build on him....them I say draft him #1.

These are just my opinions.....and they are the opinion of a casual fan who really knows dick about evaluating NFl talent.
