Mayock and Mora Jr. Say Panthers Need QB With #1 Pick

I don't think you could have a better resume than the one Newton has considering he really only played 14 college games.

Yeah, that is impressive for 14 games, but that's exactly my point. He really has only started and played for one season, then add to that the "red flags" with the NCAA stuff, King trying to destroy him at the combine...

Gabbert - What has he done? Period.

Bradford's only issues last year were injury concerns IIRC. Stafford didn't really have any concerns that I can recall... And they both had more proof on tape of what they were on the field compare to these guys.

You know, Luck didn't really have that much of a resume either. Basically, he had one pretty decent year and one really good year. He may not even match last year's numbers again, though I wouldn't bet against it.

The difference in Luck's year and Newton's is that Luck showed the skillset that is needed to be a top NFL QB. Pre-snap reads....playing under center...going though passing progressions....standing in the pocket and delivering.

Newton was a one read and then tuck-it-and-run QB. He has great physical skills. But, there is not tangible evidence or tape showing that he has the skillset to be a top NFL QB.

Not saying that he won't....but he has a ton of ???...and I don't even care about the minor off the field issues.

I never saw Bradford go deep in college, so that was a weakness. In fact, did he ever go deep in St. Louis? All I saw was a bunch of dink and dunk passes when he played the Panthers. He looked pretty much the same as he did in college to me.

And the Rams built their offensive scheme around Bradford....they put in a short passing WCO style.

Not sure what style that Newton would succeed in during his first couple of years.

Do you realize that you just contradicted yourself in the same sentence.

The fact that he has only really played 14 games (in a one read pass offense) IS one of the reasons why his resume is weak.

Perhaps you don't understand that a resume is a tangible thing. He went undefeated in the SEC, won the Heisman, AP Player of the Year, Walter Camp, Maxwell, Davey O'Brien, the Manning Award, and won the National Championship in one season under more scruitiny than any player, perhaps ever, in the history of college football.

If you can think of somewhere he should have done better, let me know and I'll acknowledge that what you just posted wasn't dumb.

We will not trade for Palmer unless he is willing to totally renegotiate his contract (if you can do that). I think with trades you have to pay his salary which is a ridiculous 50 million remaining over the next 4 years. We could afford the 6th or 7th rounder which is all anyone would give for him at this point. If he gets released it won't be right away so I think he doesn't come here.

And none of that has ANYTHING to do with showing the skillset that is required of a top NFL QB.

He is a hell of an athlete. And was a beast in the specific offense that Auburn ran. But, that offense and the skills that he exhibited do NOT translate well to a top NFL QB.

As I have said, I am not saying that he can't or won't be good....just that he has a ton of ?? about his skillset that you and the other nut-huggers just discount.

Hye...Charlie Ward won the Heisman too.

You have to understand... to all the armchair GMs around here, none of that matters because of Chris Weinke.

Edit: haha... see?

People who play in pro offenses have not transitioned better or quicker than other non-traditional QB's throughout recent history (last decade).

It is a zombie myth.

Whoever drafts Newton will build their offense around him too. I guess the big question is whether or not Chud will want to adapt his scheme to the players, or draft players that only fit his scheme. I don't know anything about the guy, so I have no idea which way he prefers to do it.

Yeah, but usually every other year, there are several QBs who have a larger resume or more successful body of work than the top two candidates this year. There seems to be more questions than usual this year.

Bradford came out of a spread offense and missed an entire season.

Russell, Smith, Carr, Vick I think all had legit question marks. Eli pulling his gay power move showed he had question marks. I also don't think any of the other recent guys like Palmer and Stafford had a season as dominate as Cam.

I mean there isn't a Peyton Manning guy like Luck. But I don't think other years people were sitting that much prettier.

We are too weak at QB and a bad QB like Clausen just makes life too hard on literally everyone else. You rarely get a chance to grab QB talent this high. I think Carolina should.
