Mayock and Mora Jr. Say Panthers Need QB With #1 Pick

And what QB in this draft is worth the top pick? Nobody!

It's arguable that this may be the first draft in which we should just move all the numbers back one and get rid of the #1 label. For instance, we pick #2, DEN #3, etc. lol.

None of these guys really are worth the #1 pick. It sucks.

Mora Jr. then made a good point that b/c it is Rivera's first year, and it's a new regime and new system, if we take a QB, Riv is in a good position in that sense because it will be "his guy" and we're not expected to go from worst to first in his first year of coaching so we can afford to let a young QB grow a year.

it was all a conspiracy. JR dumped all the vets and forced Fox to play a weak hand so that the new coach wouldn't be under a lot of pressure and would be able to take "his guy" at QB. JR didn't become a billionaire by not being shrewd. a little less so but another painfull year upcoming where we are being sold on the "future."

UGH, I'm sick of reading this.

Yes, lets ignore our most glaring problem, our Offense, to create a monster defense that no one can score more than 7 points on.

We'll still lose because we will only score 3.

If we don't get a QB (Newton still being my favorite), I'd rather we draft A.J. Green than a DT/DE.

Agreed. People underestimate how bad our offense was last year because of the QB play and chalk it up to the whole team being young and bad. The defense would've been fine, but it spent way too much time on the field because the offense couldn't sustain drives due mostly to ineffective QB play.

Eventually the defense gave out. Add to that, you got a guy like Tommie Harris out there as a FA now, and several big body 320+ DTs available in the 3rd round and later in this draft, and it's obvious to me you have to address the offense.

Mora Jr. is a moron, but I do respect Mayock, so I feel like it's a wash that I agree with both of them.

Here's the thing I don't understand. The vast majority of us know Jimmy sucks and is not the long term solution at QB. This draft has no consensus #1 pick, and other than Patrick Peterson at CB, no one really even agrees who is the best prospect per position (i.e. Fairley vs Dareus, Gabbert vs. Newton, Jones vs. Green, Bowers vs. Quinn etc). Why would we (and by we I mean Rivera and Hurney) not take the player we feel grades out the best by our standards at the QB postion? It's obviously our biggest need, has the potential to be the biggest help to a bad team, and I think the top 4-5 players in this draft at the QB position would step in immediately and be better than Clausen. An effective QB is more important than any other position in football. It's not reaching to take someone who's better than the guy you have.

I'd be okay with Gabbert or Newton at this point.

Agreed. I said that I thought Hurney and Co. would go with a defensive player if they wanted to avoid the BUST label if they guy sucked. When you miss on defense there is a lot less criticism because they're less stat oriented (DLs at least).

But, the more I look at it, I'm starting to feel like Riv will want to come in with his own guy at QB, start from scratch and build him up. I get the feeling that there's no other viable choice but go QB and ignore the bust risk, because if it pays off, we're good for a decade or so. If we go defense, I don't see a DT or CB making a big enough impact that it would change our record that much because the offense would still be lacking, even if the guy is the Rookie of the Year defensively.

IMO, no QB means we're picking in the Top 10 again next year either way so it won't set us back if we're wrong in picking a QB because our offense was that bad.

Mayock and Mora really did not say anything different than what most people on here have been saying. We have a weakness at QB and need to find a starting quality QB.

However, they also said that "IF" there was a guy that the staff believed was "the guy", they should pull the trigger. And, I 100% agree with that. I am not sure whether either Gabbert or Newton is perceived as "the guy".

If they are....I say pull the trigger. If they are not....you CANNOT reach and pick the best QB available when he is not believed to be a franchise guy.

This year is tough at QB. You have several guys who are intriguing, but you just don't have the sure fire pick (or what appears to be a sure fire pick).

there are very very very few years where there looks to be a sure thing QB to take at #1. This year is no different. Just b/c there isn't a Luck doesn't mean we shouldn't look to address the most glaring hole on the team w/ top talent.

Agreed.

But there is just something about both Gabbert and Newton that make me question whether they will be franchise guys. Too many ?? for my liking.

But, as I said.....if the staff thinks either is "the guy" I say go for it.

Yeah, but usually every other year, there are several QBs who have a larger resume or more successful body of work than the top two candidates this year. There seems to be more questions than usual this year.

I don't think you could have a better resume than the one Newton has considering he really only played 14 college games.

Do you realize that you just contradicted yourself in the same sentence.

The fact that he has only really played 14 games (in a one read pass offense) IS one of the reasons why his resume is weak.
