Yas changes his mind again: "Panthers can't afford to take Newton"

Given the way he is forcing the issue ("trade me or I'll retire"), and given his injury history, the price might not be anywhere near what you'd think... Perhaps a 3rd or a 4th...

Assuming the CBA is done prior to the draft, we swap firsts. They get newton or Gabbert (whomever they value higher).

You could talk extra picks on one side or the other, but objectively, that's a fair trade.

I've said before I'm not the world's biggest Carson Palmer fan.

But objectively speaking, is he better than any other "stopgap" option we might have?

If there's a better option for that role, I don't know who it is.

Assuming McNabb is available (especially as a FA) wouldn't he be a better option than Palmer at this point?

I would, if nothing else McNabb still has enough arm left to throw the ball deep.

Another factor I believe people overlook with the taking of Cam Newton, with the upcoming rookie pay scale there's going to be a give/take. YES rookies will be limited in their opening contract, but they are looking to reduce the power the team has over their NEXT contract (shortening that duration to becoming a UFA). Think about the personalities you recruit/draft as a rookie keeping that in mind. Guys that have illusions of grandeur are going to come here because they "have to" then the moment they get the opportunity are going to go large market ala NBA style in hopes of expanding their marketability.

Do you want that "franchise" QB that's got other goals/aspirations beyond just playing the game of football and knowing he's on borrowed time?

Not for the kind of offense we plan to run.

If we were going West Coast maybe, but since we're Coryell, I have no interest in McNabb (ditto Kolb and Gradkowski).

Again, until the CBA gets sorted out it's kind of pointless talking about trades.

Not really.

If the CBA doesn't get worked out, there'll be no season. If it does, even if it isn't until after the draft, there'll be some sort of free agent period.

You can't plan using a "draft picks only" strategy, especially considering that without the CBA, you can draft guys but you can't sign them.

you can draft cam and still get a quarter back via FA or trade

What would be the point? We've already got a project QB (two in fact). Why draft another?

He doesn't fit what offense? We have a new coaching staff and will not run the same Fox/Davidson punt first offense.

Clausen was brought in specifically because ran a Davidson type offense for Weiss at Notre Dame....this is common knowledge....Clausen was not suppose to miss a beat when he came into Davidson's offense.....Clausen doesn't fit the offense that Chud and Rivera are pushing....and the offense he did fit into he sucked at....go figure.

It depends on your opinion on Jimmy/Pike. I would much rather have Cam as a project QB. He's in another league in terms of upside and potential.
