Coaches hired

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I honestly don't get why people assume these guys are "yes men" other than assuming that's all that Fox hires. There's honestly nothing in what I've been able to find on these guys that would support that notion, especially not with Smith.

My positive feelings are bound up in two things:

1) These aren't "Fox friends". Granted I'd have been okay with Mike Haluchak, but I'm actually a bit happier that the Panthers chose instead to go with outside hires and not old cronies.

2) At least with Smith, there's prior evidence showing that he's the kind of high-energy, in your face, "drill sergeant" type that I was really hoping we'd hire for position coaches, offsetting - and complementing - the cerberal leader/teacher/technician you have in Ron Meeks.

Milus is tougher to read (how soon before 'Miley Cyrus' jokes start, I wonder) but I think P55 has a point that the common denominator in the "lack of interceptions" between the Giants a few years back and the Panthers of this past year may have been Tim Lewis. Outside of the Giants days, Milus' prior resume includes some units that did pretty well in the pickoff department.

but the prior coaching staff had the Panthers in position to have a large number of picks.....the players just dropped them. The lack of picks falls on the shoulders of our players and not coaches imo....at least the first 2/3's of the season.

He was only stating a coincidence. As in, he noticed that there were more interceptions were made when this guy was around, thus is hoping that maybe we can get some more interceptions next season.

I like that too.

I'm not going to over read anything about these hires. They are veteran coaches here to be position coaches.

The biggest position coach that I'm most interested in, hasn't been filled yet. (D-line coach).

Like any unit you have to have chemistry. I hope Fox, Hurney and Meeks had an input on these guys. With the leading factor coming from Meeks. Granted this is J. Fox's team but this is Meek's unit.

I would like to see the high motor of Tim Krumrie as our D-Line Coach. I remember they talked about his motor back during his playing days. Does anybody remember him from his days with Cincinnati? He broke his leg in SB XXIII tackling R. Craig. I saw a comment that called him "Tim Krumrie the next generation of Cowher" Bring him on.

Go Panthers

Valid that they actually have to catch it, but coaching plays a part here too. We don't know how much time the DBs spent in drills that involved catching the ball.

One thing we can take note of is the seeming lack of aggression in the secondary. I initially thought it was a positive that we had no PI calls for most of the season, but as others pointed out that could have been attributed to a lack of aggression, making it a double edged sword.

Throw in that more than once this season, we played in games where the DBs were often in a decent position to try and jump routes, but seemed reluctant to do so. At times it was a real head scratcher.

Putting 2 and 2 together, it's reasonable to think that Lewis was teaching a reactionary style of DB play, i.e. trying not to give up the big play but also not going for the big turnover and conceding the short stuff.

This is the kind of philosophy that, unfortunately, can keep a defense on the field a long time.

Agreed. Lewis was an aggressive player in Green Bay and an aggressive coach in Pittsburgh but went to a bend don't break system with the Giants and with us. As other have said a cover 2 can be played passively or aggressively. Tampa's version of the cover 2 is an aggressive attacking style of play which can be highly effective particularly with a good pass rush.

I f Meeks brings that aggressive cover 2 style zone to the panthers, I will be okay. If he mixes it up with man and some pressing by the corners I will be even happier. With an offensive that can score points, you can take some chances on the defense as long as you don't give up the long one alot.

I doubt Pittsburgh would have allowed him to do it any other way. He was certainly a lot more effective in that system, but again is it the system or the coach?

It's interesting to think back now to the fact that Lewis got his fair share of head coaching interviews, but no job offers. Makes you wonder if what he said in his interview answers didn't match up with what they were seeing on the field.

The constant freaking out, drama queenage, and irrational thinking around here is getting quite old. Get a grip people.

What exactly do you think position coaches do? All coaches must work together to produce a final product. Of course you want guys who will do what they are told by Fox and Meeks. You can't have rogue position coaches and expect to be successful. Good lord....
