If Rivera didn't like what he saw in Newton, he could have responded:

"We haven't had a chance to completely evaluate him yet as a potential pick."

"We still have question marks about him."

Instead he used a positive, interested response.

I'd say the chance no one really knows what chance we have at drafting a QB at #1 is about 99%.

Given there are still trade possibilities, it'd be dumb to say anything negative about him even if you didn't like him at all.

True. But in order to maintain the integrity of this argument you can't put stock in the negatives leaked or spoken either. You would have to assume they are all posturing or manipulative in nature. You can't cherry pick what is sincere and what isn't.

I still don't buy this argument that "talking a player up" is gonna entice somebody to trade up for him. Let's be honest here...these other teams are evaluating these players just like the Panthers are, and they are not gonna to fall for this smokescreen crap if they don't already like the player, based on their own evaluations. It's just not gonna happen.

Clausen at this point has virtually no trade value until another confirmed retard like Josh McDaniels makes himself known. Teams don't need to trade for that caliber of QB play and can probably find a QB w/ a better NFL skill set on top of that sitting on practices squads across the league.

It's not about talking the player up to convince others they are great, it's more about not letting them know you wont select him. They wont offer if they know you wont take the player anyway.

You can accomplish that by saying nothing. No need for smokescreens.

Mentioned at the combine:

When you look at the tape, you see maybe 20 plays that look like something you would run or ask an NFL QB to do - only 20 plays - hard to take a chance on any QB no matter how athletic they are.

my opinion - there are maybe 4 QB's in this draft that are worth 1st round pick - none worth the overall #1 - after that, they kind of all melt together and look the same. So, I think you go after a "D" player or maybe Jones at WR (bigger and more athletic than Green).. then pick up a QB in the 3rd or 4th.

I do not have any faith in Scam. I am sure he will make some great highlights and get favre/bonds/clemmons type run on the 4-letter at first but I do not like him for what we do.

He is never going to be a Panther. It just does not fit.

lol last i checked "what we do" is really nothing
