So we draft Newton...and he has a good rookie season...

Sure seemed to me like the Titans usually won when VY played and lost when he didn't. I wouldn't expect him to win a SB, but he wins games, crazy though he may be.

He did win games, but Cam Newton is not VY. I would hope Cam could do better than VY, because even though VY isn't really a bust and has won games, he hasn't exactly lived up to the billing of being an elite quarterback, either.

Green or Peterson. Not 100% sure.

I have Newton behind Gabbert. I like Gabbert, but I admit I am a bit of a homer. I understand why people like Newton I just feel like he is a bit of an unknown and still has some question marks relating to his accuracy etc.

Now, a WR I wouldn't take #1 overall in almost any case. As QBs go I think Newton is as proven as any. From what I've see in the drills no QB blew me away.

I do not know how you think Newton is as proven as any, but even if he no QBs blew you away in the drills, why would you then feel the need to take one? Don't you want to be blown away if you're going to take a guy at #1?

So if you wouldn't take a WR, what positions would you take exactly? The reason I like Green is I think he can make an immediate impact. The more I see of him the more I liked him, until the snafu with the media interview. I also think PP is very very impressive.

I do not think we should be bound by not taking a player because of the position they play. If they can make a big impact on the team, you take them. Obviously, QB has the biggest impact but this is a team game and our entire team needs to be good. If our franchise QB isn't in this draft, then we'll reload in other ways and see what next year looks like.

Why ANYONE would go DT that early, unless you're drafting Ndamukong Suh, is utterly beyond me. It's simply not a position early, and usually not ever.

The only reason I don't want to go DT at #1 is I think this is a deep DT class. DT is a HUGE need for this team and I would understand why we went that way if we did. DT has been a need for a long, long time, and to finally address it would be nice. Either way, I don't have enough background on the top DTs to say who I would want where.

mav, I agree with you. Unless management sees something extraordinary, which doesn't seem likely in this draft, I'd pass on QB as well, at least into the 2nd round. My feeliing right now is I wouldn't take Newton or any other QB. I'd take Peterson. What I wouldn't do is take a DT #!1overall in this draft.

Quick question

Do you think Clausen was even competent or showed any improvement as our starting QB?

How was he supposed to improve when his situation that he was in didn't improve? Don't give up on him and draft a project player #1 overall when we could use the #1 to help in other areas to make the team all around better.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
