Cam Newton looked “terrible” during his Scouting Combine workout

He completed 50% of his passes....at the combine....with zero pass rush...without a defense on the field.

That is a pathetic stat.

First of all, do did Brees.

Secondly, completion percentage at the combine doesn't mean anything. He had some great throws that were dropped. He had one that the receiver fell down.

And his go routes were really good throws. Other guys there were under throwing the passes and got credit for completions when they were actually bad throws. He made good throws but didn't complete them.

I'm sure JC would have a much better completion percentage against air. Too bad that changes when they put the pads on and the defense is allowed to his the QB. Cam actually gets better under real game conditions.

Many of his misses were thrown 10 feet above the WR's head. His throws on the out pattern were pathetic.

We have no idea how Cam will play in a pro-style offense. He has NEVER been asked to do the things that he will need to do at the next level.

Again, I am not saying that Cam will not be a good or even great QB. Just that there are too many ?? about him to warrrant the #1 pick.

With his college tape, his icon comments, and his poor performance at the combine....I still say he is taken in the middle of the first round. Slight ahead of where The Golden Calf of Bristol was selected.

Didn't see the combine, but I would take a bad throw that was caught over a good one that's overthrown :p

Once again though, we either take a QB at #1, or we probably won't get one at all unless we just get lucky and find the next Tom Brady later in the draft.

A lot of the deep throws that were caught, were underthrown and Sterling Sharpe was saying things like..."that's a pick in a real game" or "that's an incompletion in a real game". He liked what he saw from Newton, because none of his were underthrown and wouldn't have been picks.

I didn't actually see it so I can't truly comment. In a game I would definitely prefer an overthrow. Just giving teeray a hard time :D

The out routes were pathetic and had to do with slow footwork.

But the other passes were not as bad as you suggest. There were cones down the field that the quarterbacks were supposed to throw to not to the receivers. And sevral times receivers ran poor routes for all the quarterbacks. For example on the deep out route most receivers faded quickly to the outside and tried to catch the ball over their inside shoulder istead of do what they supposed to do which was cut and go inside and then do a post pattern and catch the ball on their outside shoulder.

Most of those overthrown balls were actually pretty well thrown balls to the right spot. Not all but many were. He showed good arm strength and good touch on those passes. On the out routes, not so much.

I am fine with that. The talent at QB is weak in this draft.

Depends on how you define talent. The polish is not there on many guys but the athleticism is actually pretty good. For example the 40 times were great. There were 5 QBS with a sub 4.6 time. The strength and leaps were outstanding. There are just a number of spread guys who are atletic but not as polished this year.

The only point here is that the way a player looks in combine throwing drills is not the only determinant of success in the NFL.

But you know what? He still did not look good. This is not just "haters" talking. His QB coach basically said the same thing. He did have some nice go route throws but he looked awful in other areas from what I saw. Sure, he was missing in the right area (high), but that doesn't mean it was good he missed... just that it was good he didn't miss low.

His stock wasn't hurt but it was NOT helped by Sunday.

Last year, Mayock said that Bradford wasn't worth the #1 overall either but he has done pretty well so far. Either way it's a gamble, becuase there is no way to know for sure how Gabbert or Newton will progress, and there is no way to know if we will be in a position to get Luck or Barkley next year.
