Cam Newton looked “terrible” during his Scouting Combine workout

Finally watched it for myself...

He definitely has some things to work on, but at the same time it was obvious that not all of the incompletions were on him. Brian Billick noted this on commentary. He said the receivers were all expecting the ball to be thrown at them, when in reality the QB's were instructed to throw at an orange cone on the sideline, which the receivers were supposed to have reached by the time the ball arrived.

And also, none of the QB's really had good timing with any of these WR's. The one thing that did concern me somewhat was his out routes, which he missed badly. Clearly he still has some footwork and dropback kinks to work out.

But he has a damn good arm, a hell of a quick release, and great anticipation. I think - like I've thought from the start - that if he has a chance to sit and develop before being put on the field that he's got a very good chance at becoming something special.

I'm very interested to see how he looks at his pro day, working with receivers he's familiar with. Really, the biggest concern I have about Cam Newton isn't Cam Newton; it's "team Newton" and the influence they may or may not have over him.

Still, as I've said all along, we HAVE to have a QB. Without one we're treading water even with a stud DT or WR picked 1st overall. If I thought we would be in a spot to take a good one next year I'd say wait, but I don't expect us to be.

Cam's not NFL ready, but his potential is such that I think we have to bite the bullet and take this risk while we have the chance, otherwise we'll likely end up giving away our next two drafts to move up and take Matt Barkley in 2012.

Why then did non of the other QB's throwing have the same issues with the WR's.

The WR excuse is pathetic and total bullshit.....and it was sad that Cam tried to play it that way.

Bottom line.....

Cam is a QB that has never shown to be able to read defenses at the LOS....never shown to be able to go through his progressions....never shown to be able to work from under center (turning his back on the defense and then re-engaging with his WR's as well as the defense.

Now, none of these is directly his fault. He was not asked to do these things.

Now, you have a guy who looked lost at the combine. Could not hit an out pattern to save his life. Threw high and wide all combine long.

And the nuthuggers are going to blame it on the WR's? So, he sucks when he does not have his WR's to throw to. Pathetic.

Damn near every other QB was hitting those passes....how were they able to "handle" those bad QR's, when Super Cam couldn't.

How? Because Cam Newton is overhyped and over-rated as a passing QB. He is a great athlete thrying to play QB.

He very well may turn out to be good. However, after seeing that performance....along with the things that he outright has to be taught about the position....there is NO POSSIBLE WAY that he is worth the #1 pick.

Any other QB who has these ?? and that performance would be crucified by the fans here and the media.

Take the combine drills with a grain of salt, not till the pro days are over do you really have a full complete picture of the draft stock of a player. Just from today alone Julio Jones at the moment is neck and neck with Green for best wr in the draft. Some have him ahead of Green... Julio dominated the wr drills and Green didn't, secondly Green had a pretty slow 40ty time.

Also Cam's upside (plus the fact that Rivera likes him...) give Cam just as much of a shot as being drafted as any other player.. If not more so.

They did. Have you actually watched it? I mean all the way through? Not just the Cam clips? Half the balls thrown hit the turf - and that's in total, including all the QB's. Some were more accurate than others, but nobody really looked THAT good, unless of course you want a coke head under center...

And have you actually watched the interview in question where he mentioned the WR's? If not, go watch it. That report is garbage. He wasn't saying anything of the kind, just making a point that he wasn't very familiar with the WR's. He admitted he needs to improve and didn't blame anything on anyone but himself. Next time actually watch something for yourself before taking the media's word for it.

He was never asked to do these things. Can he do them? That's what the evaluation process is all about. And it's something only the teams will know based on interviews and such. This has nothing to do with his combine workout.

Again, he completed 11/21 passes. Horrible? The out-routes were, yes, I'll admit, but as Billick said, this is the first time he's been asked to make those kinds of throws, the first time he's been asked to take 5 & 7 step drops. Considering that, it wasn't a horrible effort, even if there was a lot of room for improvement.

Damn near every other QB was hitting those passes....how were they able to "handle" those bad WR's, when Super Cam couldn't.

Again, this is wrong. Cam was far from alone in throwing incompletions and actually threw one of the better deep balls among all the QB's. I'd say he was pretty average accuracy-wise compared to the others. Nobody really stood out besides Ryan Mallett and Josh Portis, a division II QB.

How? Because Cam Newton is overhyped and over-rated as a passing QB. He is a great athlete thrying to play QB.

He probably is a little overhyped, but that's only because the fans and media expect every top draft pick to be able to step in from day one and be a stud. What's being hyped isn't what he is right now, but the potential he has, which is practically unlimited.

He very well may turn out to be good. However, after seeing that performance....along with the things that he outright has to be taught about the position....there is NO POSSIBLE WAY that he is worth the #1 pick.

Any other QB who has these ?? and that performance would be crucified by the fans here and the media.

It is being crucified by the fans here and the media and he's the only QB who has been, despite being far from the only one to have a poor combine.

I think you're under the impression we all think Cam Newton is some sort of savior that is perfect right now. I don't. Most pro-Cam folks here don't either. What we think is that he's got by FAR the most potential of any player in this draft class and isn't that what taking the BPA is all about?
