Cam Newton looked “terrible” during his Scouting Combine workout

Gabbert's agent rarely has his QBs throw at the combine, so I don't think that was why.

I heard that too, but I wonder if his clients were all spread QBs. If I had a pro set QB, I would tell him to particpate. However, with QB's value often below where they are drafted, maybe he is smart. However, if he had Locker as a client (a player with terrific skills but poor film) then he would have to send him to the combine. If this becomes more about agents than players, then I would switch agents.

I don't think we can trade down, which is why I don't know that I want us taking a QB #1 overall.

Unless a team falls in love with a QB, I am afraid you are right. We could offer a good deal, like take a second rounder when it would normally cost more to move. We need a second rounder! (But I don't want Hurney to think we don't appreciate Armanti Edwards)

Many of his QBs were spread QBs but not all.

Ryan is probably the biggest example of a QB that wasn't from a spread and just chose not to throw. He didn't go #1 overall, but I also don't think any of the Qbs in this draft should either.

We do need a second rounder but I don't think we'll get it with trading down. Just don't see a good reason for teams to do so, when there are so many positions where the 2nd best player is arguably better than the 1st...

long post about where I think Newton stands now. feel free to ignore if convincing people that Newton is going to be a bust or a star is a huge priority for you--

Newton's ability to make an immediate impact as a pro QB is definitely his biggest question and could very well have a serious effect on where he is drafted. however, due to his potential and his presence as a potential leader, i think some team is going to make the leap and choose him ahead of where the draft calculus thinks he should go. at the same time, there are legit questions about whether he's worth the #1 pick.

from my layman perspective, his kinks in dropping back and rushing his delivery are something you can smooth out relatively quickly. i really like his arm, and i don't think you can question his running ability as an athlete. if you can sort out his issues dropping back from under center, i think you'll see a lot more consistency in his accuracy on medium-range throws. he can flick it deep and can take advantage of straight-line speed in the WR corps.

i do get the sense from him that he wants to work to be great, not just good. i personally do not have a problem with his confidence in his abilities and think he will put forth the effort to become a successful quarterback within a system at the pro level. i think he has a star quality that, given different circumstances, would make him a slam dunk franchise QB.

i do not get the sense from him that he has an elite intellectual feel for offense. but, two caveats to that which i think are important: 1. the game tends to get quite a bit simpler when you are a player of his size and physical talents, and 2. i'm not sure what amount of aptitude about offensive concepts you can really expect a QB coming out of college to have. there's a reason almost all quarterbacks take a couple of seasons to start looking natural and comfortable at the position. pro offense is just another level from even the most complicated college systems. sometimes a QB being a master of a complex college system can be a hindrance, as at the pro level you might need to get him out of some unhelpful habits to get him to work with the pro system. it really doesn't hold to a rule that players from simpler systems in college do better or worse than players from complex systems. it just depends on the young man and his commitment to executing the system and game plan.

how Newton looked in today's drills doesn't really define what his status as a prospect is, i don't think. you're going to either believe in this guy or you're not. and i would bet the opinion of the Panthers' scouts and offensive staff were largely formed before today, as far as his abilities as a QB on the field right now. he looked out of sync in the out drills with the 7-step drop. the announcers on the nfl.com webcast were very in tune with the way in which his drop back was having an effect on his delivery. the tremendous scrutiny that he's under during this combine is a good test for what will be expected of him at the next level. he was inconsistent mechanically but a few reports of 'defensive' attitude in private team meetings notwithstanding, i think his attitude and demeanor as i have seen it during the combine is a plus for him, not a minus.

the juicy part of this equation, and really the most important part for Cam if he wants to be the #1 pick, is what happens in private meetings with the Panthers' staff. the Panthers may very well have been the team to ask him about the play at the end of the national championship game. (though I doubt they were the people who caused the account of that to reach the desk of Adam Schefter) if they asked him that question or another question and didn't like his answer, then they probably won't pick him. i think we'll find out the answer to that on draft day or a couple of days before. with the questions Newton has about his ability to adapt his talents to a pro scheme, you're going to want to be all-in on his makeup, attitude and commitment. tough questions in a private interview are as important with him as with any other player in the draft. pity that us fans are likely never going to hear about what actually makes a difference in those meetings, aside from small leaks from people with agendas.

I don't care who the Panthers draft; but, the negativity towards this kid is unbelievable.

please... the negativity towards him is miniscule compared to The Golden Calf of Bristol last year. yet it was fair to access The Golden Calf of Bristol as not being nfl ready.

newton is not nfl ready.

true but NOBODY is going to trade up to #1 for any of these QB's, therefore, any trading up would be done with other teams and not with us. There is tremendous DL talent in this draft so no need to trade up to #1 for that and there is no RB or OL player worthy of a trade up so in essence, we're not trading down. period.

You can't lose ground to Gabbert who didn't even particiipate. Newton put it out there and learned some things in the process. He found out more about what he needs to work on. I don't think his performance was that shocking, everyone said that he would need work and he does. What I found interesting was how he handled it. Instead of making excuses for his performance he admitted it didn't go as well as he expected and talked about what he needed to work with which was consistency in his opinion.

I thought with all the pressure of the situation he handled it well. For me we need a franchise quarterback who keeps striving to get better and is honest about how he is doing and willing to do whatever he can to do better. If he comes back in a few weeks and does much better at his pro-day you have credit him for working hard to improve and working to get better.

Frankly I think that you learn more about a guy like newton when things don't go well than when they do. Actually I came away with a realistic understanding for what he needs to improve upon but a better sense of Newton as a person.
