QB Combine Thread

LOL that argument is about as good as the Cam won the Heisman argument ;)

That wasn't an argument. That was the truth. About the only other option is to draft Blaine Gabbert, which I have already stated that I'm fine with, as long as the Panthers believe he is the best man for the job.

Other than that, we can hope we can trade more draft picks for Luck next year, I guess. That doesn't appeal to me either though.

I guess the anti Cam people are right. It's better to go with Jimmy Clausen, who has a great understanding of an NFL offense, but who is scared out on the field, than to go with an elite talent who needs to clean up his footwork. Whatever.

You know, you might have a point if it was either Cam Newton or we lose the draft pick, can't pick up anyone in FA, and are stuck with Clausen for 10 years.

But in reality, this is one draft. The quarterbacks in this draft have a lot of questions, and this is coming from someone who really likes Gabbert and finds the potential of Newton exciting. They are not the only options to go #1, and it is very possible that we could be a better team if we drafted a different spot and then picked up a veteran FA and we had a decent competition in camp and then evaluated the position next year. Use this pick on another need (and this team does have more than just QB) and go from there.

I'm not agaisnt the Panthers drafting Newton, as long as there is a plan in place as to who is going to be the starter for at least 2011 and possibly 2012 because it won't be Newton. He isn't ready, he won't be ready by the start of the season and God forbid he would have to be thrown in like Clausen had to be.

Gabbert, Locker or Mallett won't be ready either. That Matt Ryan type of QB just isn't in this year's draft class. And don't forget that type of QB was already drafted last year in Jimmy Clausen. Those type of QB just don't come around that often.

Again, I'm ok with drafting a QB #1 overall but only if the reason is because that QB is the best player on the board, not because you don't want Clausen starting and you don't see any other alternative.

Oh yeah, there is always Billy Volek or Mark Bulger.

BTW, I'm a Matt Moore fan to, but he is not the answer if you want a franchise QB. He has talent, but he folded under the pressure of being "the guy".

So people say it takes at least 3 years to really judge a QB, yet you are certain Moore can't handle the pressure after a game and a half?

They have completely pissed all over Josh Freeman the last two day. Called him the wrong name yesterday. Didn't know his first name. Then today they talk about the great QB's in our division. They said there are two good QB's in our division Ryan and Brees. Poor Josh. Dude is a top 12 QB in the league and just gets dissed

Fuggin clueless.

I would take Josh Freemon in a minute over Newton and Shaub.

So I just watched the QB workouts and one guy who really impressed me who I'd never heard of is Josh Portis from Division II California University of Pennsylvania. He was hitting throws with ease and looked real comfortable doing it.

Might not be a bad option for a late round flyer...

I think anyone who says that they are right that Cam needs some work and that others haven't been saying that as well on both sides of the argument are not only tooting their horn but ignoring the fact that everyone has been saying he needs work. The question isn't whether he is a raw product but how hard he will work to fix things, how long it will take to fix things and whether you are looking for a quick fix or a long term solution to our problem.

The argument he won't be ready this year is a valid one, he won't be especially if the lockout draws out. So absolutely, picking him, means he wouldn't be ready to start befiore 2012. And that would require that you don't stash him as your third QB and ignore giving him reps and working with him.

If you want a guy who will ready sooner, than Locker would be a good choice. Gabbert is up in the air as he wussed out of the combine and football is about what you have done lately and how you rise in the face of competition.

But passing on a QB still means you are working with a rookie in 2012 who is lilkely not Luck unless we really suck next year as well and there are no guarantees the other guys will be better than the bunch this year. SO the waiting a year or two arguments makes less sense in that you are just putting off the decision another year rather than do the best you can do right now.

The question is do we think a guy like Newton will be our guy in a year or two or do we think that waiting will somehow give us better results and we can get an impact guy this yearat another position. That is certainly a valid strategy.

For me though I would work with Newton to get him ready for 2012 when he can be an impact player and our franchise guy versus waiting for another year and then still drafting a project at QB and being a year or two away. I think with a decent FA vet who can do a Rodney Peete and we can be 8-8 this year, we can grrom the long term starter for 2012. Is this the only way to go? No, just how I want to see it go.

Great post P55. I think that is a great plan and one that would work. And the reason I'm not against taking a QB. My only problem is that you don't reach with the #1 overall pick. If Newton, Gabbert, Locker or Mallett isn't sitting at the top of your list (or at the very least in the top 3) you don't pick a QB.

There are other options and variations to what you are saying. Trading down is of course one of those. But so is maybe trading for a QB like Palmer (or subsitute a QB you like more) and have him be your starter for 4 to 6 years and use that time to find and develop a QB. Or draft a QB in a later round that you like to develop.

I truely think the fear of Clausen starting and what to do with Clausen is a major factor. But you can't allow that to get in the way, either way, in the decision making proccess.

Jarhead I'm not quite sure what you mean??? :o

But I was referring to them talk about him right now. They were talking about our division and said there were only two good QB's in out division.

I guess that have 31 td's (6 rushing) and 6 int's isn't a good QB.

I think they just forgot about him.

It's his second season. One good season doesn't make you a good QB.

:iagree: :iagree: :iagree: Well said. I haven't said once that he should start on day 1. As a matter of fact I have caught heat for suggesting that Clausen should start again opening day next season.

His issue wasn't as much his accuracy as it was his footwork. Especially on the outs. He was slow getting back and therefore was rushing his throw and having to throw the ball with more rpm's. If he were able to get his drop right he would've been able to relax and take a little off the ball and been a little more accurate.

Would I have liked for him to have aced it?? Sure. But frankly he was about where I thought he would be.

He still has a pro day and a day with potential teams. And I don't think his combine was as bad as some people think.

My main contention isn't that he is pro ready like Luck. My feeling is his upside is the highest we have seen since Vick. And also higher than Luck's.

I will say what GM's said about Vick rings true with Cam:

If he hits you will win 3-4 super bowls, if he doesn't you will be unemployed.

I would be willing to take that risk, and it is my belief that the Panthers should.

If we don't draft a QB we still will get a really good player and we will be fine. But it likely forfeits at least the next two seasons (instead of possibly just one) to mediocrity at best.

Especially in the NFC South.

I'm pretty sure this will be Moore's 4th year, if he makes the roster, so last year was his third in the league...he should have been ready. I still think he can be a pretty good QB, but I don't think it will be here and I don't think he will be a full time starter.

My point was you need to watch a QB for 3 years to truly evaluate him is what most experts say yet you are evaluating Moore based on a game and a half. IMO doesn't matter if it was his 3th year or his 6th, can't judge based on a game and a half.

A game and a half isn't enough to tell if he was ready.
