Shockey to visit the Panthers tomorrow.

Shockey never was elite in the way Gates and Gonzo are elite but he was damn good. He always seemed to step up in big games and be a game changer, even in New Orleans just not as much due to the injuries.

Rosario and King are probably on the way out so signing a vet like Shockey makes sense to me. The problem is a contract won't be signed by any player right now that has been cut due to the CBA issues but I would not put it past any GM, Hurney included, to say here is a contract offer, sign it once the CBA is done, wink wink, nod nod. It wouldn't protect either side and things could change quickly but a pre-arranged agreement is a possiblity.

JR won't sign anyone before a CBA is done.

Guess that's a done deal.

Don't be so sure. JR said none of OUR free agents would be re-signed before a new CBA is reached. If I'm not mistaken - and I could be, I'm not sure - veterans like Shockey are immune to the "30% rule" and as a result could sign a typical deal whereas Kalil, Johnson, Williams, Anderson, etc. are all coming off their rookie deals and would fall under the 30% category.

That said... I'm iffy on Shockey. He would be an upgrade, but can he stay healthy? I'm not worried about his attitude; he's a f**king TE, not a QB or head coach. And his attitude isn't THAT bad; it's not like he raped two women or... er, sorry Steeler fans.

I wouldn't hate the move, but I would be skeptical of whether or not he could stay on the field. For the right price, why not? So long as he doesn't ask for a big deal, why not?

Shockey was never the focal point of the saints offense. You don't really need that safety valve when you've got a guy like Brees under center who could fit the ball into pretty much any space with deadly accuracy. He got production because Brees drops back like 650 times every year, but some of his talent wasn't put to good use in New Orleans. Talentwise i think he can still put up a 65 reception/700 yard season, but it's mostly a question if he can stay on the field. Given he would reunite with his old college coach, if we did sign him i don't think he'd be as much of a loudmouth as he was in NY, and even in New Orleans it looked like he was in good spirits, unless we can't fix the QB position

He wouldn't be doing a favor if Carolina had no real interest in signing him and was just coming in for a charity interview. Chud wouldn't have a need for that kind of favor

i mean favor in the sense of keeping shockey's name in the paper and making it seem like multiple teams are interested in him. chud doing shockey a solid. i'm just speculating. i'd still bet money that he isn't signed.

After reading this, I actually got to thinking he probably shouldn't be signed before a CBA gets done. Because as much as I respect a man that doesn't flip-flop, regardless of if it makes him unpopular or not (JR), I would probably be at least a little bitter if I'm Charles Johnson or Deangelo Williams that you say you want me on the team but can't sign until a CBA is in place, but you'll sign this guy?

That may very well be taking it the wrong way, but it's not far-fetched to say those thoughts could enter their minds. If this is the case, I don't want Shockey if it makes it even the slightest bit less likely to retain either of those two.

We can't sign sign D-Will or CJohn b/c of the 30% rule (they would require salaries more than 30% higher than they had last year). Shockey was scheduled to make $4.2M this year ( if I remember correct) which means we could offer up to $5.46M to sign him (not that we would). I think $2.xx should get him. Not that I want him b/c of prone to injury. Not crazy about his personality either, though I'd live with that if I though he could stay healthy.
