Clausen, on whether he was ready to play: “I don’t know”

Clausen isn't going anywhere. If you think he will be cut or traded you are not very bright. We have very little invested in him and Dan Marino wouldn't have done much better last year with what we had to work with. If Riveria has any sense he will go after the best veteran QB he can get. No one knows who will be available until after this CBA mess gets ironed out.

Folks in this forum kill me. I hope Edwards and Clausen turn into pro bowlers just to see everyone in this forum back track. So where are all of the Matt Moore lovers?

I just don't hear the confidence from this kid that I expected to hear... I would much rather hear him say "no, I clearly wasn't ready" or "yes I was, but things didn't go as expected" than to hear him say "I don't know".

It is a damned if you do damned if you don't comment. Regardless of what he said it would not come off well. If he says he wasn't ready then if makes the coaches look bad - if he says he was ready then people will think what world is this guy living in thinking he was ready. Probably why he said "I don't know."

I'm with CatMan on this one. "I don't know" is about the worst answer you can have in this case. You want to see some kind of fire. I personally thought when he came in the game at the beginning of the year that he HAD fire. His body language was world's better than what we were seeing from Matt Moore. But as he started to struggle, got no support from the coaches, got bitched out by smitty he kind of went into a shell.

You can't really write him off completely at this point, with a little support he could be greatly improved, but what does that leaves us with? At his best he can be a great backup? He doesn't seem to have the mental and testicular fortitude to be anything else

I disagree, I think it would have been much better for Clausen to say that he clearly wasn't ready based on his performance.

You are all probably right about Clausen. However, the Panthers in 2010 probably had more problems that Denver did during Elway's rookie year.

Elway started 10 games, 47% completion rate, 54 passer rating, 7 TDs 14 Ints. He was the first pick in the draft. Denver fans wanted him gone.

Not expecting him to become an Elway, but since nobody here or in the NFL can evaluate QB talent and predict success effectively, it is probably best to give the kid the benefit of the doubt.

I agree completely and i expect him to be much better next season, but ultimately don't think he can be THE guy.

Really? I always heard "I don't know" was the beginning of wisdom.

He can't say NO to that question because it sheds poor light on the FO. But that is the obvious answer. I don't know why he didn't say yes, as most any player would in that situation. Maybe he's honest and not a stereotypical mouthpiece, but that doesn't fly in the NFL. When you're honest, the media gripes about it and...people make threads about you.

btw it is worth mentioning that in yesterday's observer chat, Gantt mentioned that at some point Clausen stopped listening to the coaching..the argument could be made he didn't like the coaching he was getting..but it's just another mark on his attitude problems.

Yeah, but that is a double edged sword. Maybe they weren't working with him, something I happen to believe. And he knew they were gone after the year anyway. The season was lost, everybody knew that. So he did what he could do with what he had....no QB is NFL ready.

Even Bradford didn't look as good at the end of the season, once there was film on him.

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
