NFL Execs: Easy Choice for Panthers #1 Pick...

This is fool's gold. QB's that are taken after the 20th pick have a fail rate of over 90%. You can get lucky and find those guys but it takes A LOT of luck and patience.

Last year 14 teams had winning records. 11 of those teams had QB's taken in the first round.

The success rate for first round QB's is around 50%. Second round is @10%. The subsequent rounds, as you can imagine get worse and worse. Around 3%.

It is erroneous to look at this chart and think, "We can get the guy in the second round or later." It happens. But not often.

It is the riskier play than drafting a QB early

See you can take stats, and spin it any way you want to. If having winning seasons is the only way to measure the good of a QB, regardless that they need talent around them to win, then fine.

There are PLENTY of quarterbacks that if given the right circumstances, can be winners. None of them do it by themselves. Their teams need to play good defense, and their other offensive players have to be able to make plays.

good quarterbacks can be found in every round, and even undrafted. It's putting them in the right situations to help them succeed that is important.

Proper scouting, and not putting a player on the field before he is ready for it, is important.
