You may not agree we should draft Cam Newton, but we can all agree that drafting Blaine Gabbert #1 would be one of the dumbest moves in NFL history.

this i agree on, the funny thing is is that you didnt hear jack poo about gabbert until after luck made his decision.

shows how bad this qb class is

Gabbert has a lot of pieces in place to be really good.

Having said that, it seems that he came from nowhere on the map to number one bc of one half of football against Iowa.

I don't see it but I haven't really seen a lot of him. Did see the Nebraska game which wasn't pretty for him

really I think the panthers should select a QB at #1 or not at all. unless the quarterback they looooooove is somebody like Dalton. Then you trade down to #17 and take him there à la Flacco. if you love a guy don't mess around and lose him to another team.

Because the reasoning you clowns use is outrageous. There are plenty of great things to say about Cam and some things that cause concern but you guys focus on things that don't matter one bit and use it as concrete evidence as to why we should pick him.

Brooks said take him!

He won at the JuCo level!

He won the Heisman!

He went undefeated!

He will sell jerseys!

Etc etc etc

I am not saying he will not be a good NFL qb, but not a one of those reasons would convince me to take.

How quick of a release does he have?

Does he know when to run, when to pass and can he sense pressure?

Can he move around in the pocket enough to buy time without taking off?

How accurate is he with a DE bearing down on him thats nearly as fast as he is?

Does he think clearly under pressure?

Can he handle the emotional strain that comes with being an NFL QB?

Of course, these are the question I have about any college qb. And in truth, they are questions that can't be answered until he plays. My personal opinion is that Newton could be a good NFL QB, but it might take a couple of years as he learns to depend less on his legs and more on his arm.

.....don't want Gabbert at number one, if we trade down and he's still available then maybe

I might have been swayed at the combine but him not throwing tells me two things. One he has poor arm strength or Two he has poor accuracy. What ever or the combo of the two he is the biggest risk of all QBs.

only reason some exec thinks we should take gabbert is because they want newton.

Exactly, They have been playing up Gabbert for months now since Luck did not declare.

Like JaWalrus Bad.

For sure, Newton is the only QB that could be great. The rest have bust or avg wrote all over them. Hell Locker might not even be in the NFL.

Gabbert did not come out of nowhere. He was a top recruit coming out of high school. He had a good year last year and many people had Gabbert was one of the top underclassman quarterback going through the season, particularly after Oklahoma. However, nobody thought he was going to declare for the draft. It was just assumed he'd go back for his senior season. Then, he got word from the draft advisory group that he had a first round grade, and, well, the rest is history. Once he declared, he immediately hit the first round on nearly everyones draft board, and he began to climb as people actually watched film of him and started to evaluate him more critically.

Gabbert was ranked in the top 5 of one of McShay's drafts before Luck said he wasn't coming out.

He did kinda come out of nowhere to fans around here, but he's been talked about as a good quarterback for some time. Just NOONE thought he'd declare - I watch Mizzou and had no idea he would, I was astonished... not because I didn't think he'd be good but just because I thought he was going to stick it out and get his degree etc. But Mizzou's coaches tell guys that if they get a first round grade, you always take it.... so he did.

Totally true but all NFL QBs take at least 3 years to become great. I will say though Emotional strain should not be a problem. From all the drama in college he faced it should be clear he is not a VY. VY would have quit a long time ago if he had to face all that.

If no one expected him to come out is that why he wasn't around on a lot of the big boards until after he declared?? Serious question no sarcasm intended.

I mean I saw him play about five games and just felt like meh... I certainly didn't think he stunk or anything but he also didn't stand out to me. I also had no idea at the time he would be so highly rated so I didn't focus on him the way I normally would.

Then he crushed it the first half against Iowa and even though they lost it seemed to generate a lot of buzz for the guy.

You are probably right but it just felt like he came from thin air but that may be bc he wasn't expected to come out so no one had him on their big boards.

Gabbert has really shaky mechanics, I was already thinking pass on him but with him refusing to throw at the combine that makes him a definite pass in my mind.

Bowers and Fairley are both severely overrated IMO.

To me it comes down to three guys: the two so called "BPA" elite talents in Green and Peterson and a guy that is much riskier but with maybe the highest upside of anyone in Newton. And then there's trading down which is probably your best bet if you can get a good offer, which I'm not sure that you can.

That is a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out objection. Overruled.

With this draft class (no clear # 1 overall talent) it doesn't surprise me at all that 3 different exec's have 3 different opinions on who should go first.

Yeah no kidding right? On a related note, who cares what those other guys say? Some people treat the words of GM's as words of draft gods. People make mistakes, even when it's their job. There's a reason that some teams are better at drafting than others.
