Palmer wants Out; Marvin Lewis looking for a QB

On NFL Network right now. Concerning Palmer: "We have to move forward. Put football team together" He used the word "Closure". Said would not speculate, but mentioned that they needed improvement at QB position and they could look veteran or draft pick. Was careful not to say Palmer would not be there, but he did mention that the owner would not trade him or something to that effect. Said he would be talking to Cam Newton. Talked about his smile, charisma, etc. Said "I am excited about (meeting him."

Buffalo, Cincinnati, Arizona, San Francisco--all in top 7 seem to need a QB. Trade in works?

Do not rule out Gabbert. He could bring a SF, Washington, etc. into the mix. A lot of movement at QB before the draft is very possible.

Yeah, starting to work in our favor. What do we ask for to move back from say 1 to 7?

According to the JJ trade chart

http://www.drafttek.com/tradechart.html

that is 1500 points, which means we would get (SF is 7th; Cincinnati is 4th) get SF's first, second, and at least their first in 2012.

To trade down to Cincinnati (which would be perfect to me) in the 4th slot, we would pick up an additional second rounder (about 550 pts), a third rounder (280 points) and and probably a sdecond rounder in 2012. I think we would have to give a deal because there is no true top dog.

Other teams who are interested in QB in the draft:

Buffalo: They are drafting QB. Will they sit and take either Newton or Gabbert?

Cincinnati: see above. I think they like Newton and will know Buffalo and possibly the Panthers will also be interested.

Arizona: Most people think they will wait for a veteran in free agency or a trade. However, they could bring in an aging McNabb and draft a QB too.

San Francisco: If Harbaugh likes Gabbert, he might move up ahead of Buffalo to get him.

Tennessee: I think they might like Gabbert (after Vince Young, I don't see a similar style QB) and will work him under Collins for a year or two.

Dallas: Lot of rumblings how Dallas in interested in Newton. If JJ likes him, the Cowboys would try to deal with us. Jerry and Jerry are buddies, which could bridge a deal.

Washington: Newton not seen as a good fit here, but I think they wait and reach for Locker or take Gabbert if he falls this far, which he won't.

Minnesota: Many needs, limited draft picks. I think they sign McNabb.

Miami: They will try to trade up, but they have no second rounder. Unless a CBA is in place, they are not dealing with us.

This Palmer thing is going to be interesting. It might be stupid but I have a feeling Cincy is going to call his bluff.

They aren't going to release him or trade him. Force him to play or follow through and retire.

Although it will ultimately come down to our own FO assessment. If we like Cam or Gabbert as much as some of these other teams there is no way we trade down. But if we aren't sold on those guys and someone wants to get him it very well could happen.

I'm not buying the smokescreen theory yet. We have had nice things to say about him (Cam) but we haven't just blown him up either. Be more telling what happens and what we say after he comes to town for his interview.

...

The trade chart is just a baseline of values based off the assumption that there is usually going to be one or two elite, "sure thing" players in the draft that are head and shoulders above the rest. When there are 8-10 possible players we could select with #1 overall pick (according to Rivera), I do not believe that we would be able to get near the value for #1 shown on the chart.

I think you are right. However, they cannot go with their backups --It would seal Marvin's fate. He will have to get a QB in the draft. He seemed to like Newton. Would he move up to get him, knowing that Buffalo wants a QB too? I think the more teams in the 2-10 range who want a QB, the more offers we will get. I see Cam in Cincy. I see us taking Dareus, Peterson, or Green and picking up a second rounder or more.

Newton could pass the panther eye test, but drafting risky players in the first is not the Panther way. Regardless of what you want, unless Chud and Shula fall in love with Cam or Gabbert, we are looking to drop (I would assume).

UPDATE: NFL Network Lombardi talking about character. Players well coached about interviewing. "I had Ray Lewis in the room and Lawrence Phillips in the same room. Lewis went to the projector...Phillips was just interested in signing bonuses..."

ANd Teeray, I think it is inevitable that we start talking about Gabbert too. Maybe it would be terrible value, but if we need a QB, not picking one could be a worse value. I think Newton's potential upside vs. risk ranks him somewhere around 15 overall. Gabbert is around 20-25.

What Brown doesn't understand is he can pull his hard ass BS on Ocho but not Palmer. Palmer IS their franchise and he has enough money after this year to retire and still be well off the rest of his life. There were reports out that he has planned this since last year. He and his wife just had a baby I believe? They took that into consideration as well.

Brown better Wake the hell up and cut the bull poo and give the man a trade. his TEAM sucks ass and they need all the draft picks they can get. A Shiny new first round QB will bring some fans back to the table.

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
