Talking up Cam in our best interest

Actually, it makes perfect sense.

If you talk a guy down or act like you aren't interested, you get no trade offers, but the team below you might.

Teams only talk trade with you if they think they might lose out on the guy they want.

The more hype a top player gets, the more people get interested, the better the chance you get a bidding war and end up with a better offer.

Not with the first pick. If a team really wants a guy they will talk to you and so will other teams. There is no need to try to make a guy seem more valuable because other teams know who they want and your not going to sway them one way or another. Everyone knows you can pick whoever you want and if they want one of those guys they will try to make a deal or find out you are not willing to make that deal.

Yes, I think theres a good bit of talking up, if we want a trade we really have to convince people we're going to take him at 1.

My hope is Buffalo wants to trade up, we can get their 3rd pick, 2nd rounder and probable a 2nd next year. I know Gailey is really excited about Newton, so maybe something will unfold.

And us having one of the worst QB situation last year does not already do that?

I think people will say just about anything to try to prove we are not considering Newton.

I see it as a win-win personally. As an athlete, he is amazing. If he puts on a strong display at the combine, then the potential is there physically. He's not a dumb kid either. If he interviews well and truly "gets it" in terms of where he needs to be (read: out of trouble) then... well... why not? A more athletic Big Ben? He throws a good deep ball also.

(please trade us Buffalo! I'd like Kyle Rudolph in the second.)

I think it will be easy to determine if we are going to trade down.

If we start to talk about how impressive Cam Newton is, and how we would likely select him with the first pick, teams that really want him will be in the trade picture. It is the only way to get decent value for our first pick.

Does anyone think there is another player in this draft that we could possibly warrant another team going after the first pick? I don't.

Well if there is no other player worth trading up for, then why would we need to talk Cam up in the first place, and why isn't he worth the 1st pick?

Don't you think it would be kinda stupid to talk a guy up then expect people to trade with YOU to get him??? If that was the plan it wouldn't work with the first overall pick.

Is like saying..."I really love this car but I'll let you buy it even though I love it so much.". Doesn't make any sense.

Exactly! The point of the OP makes no sense because it doesn't work with the #1 pick. If you're talking up a guy then someone would trade up AHEAD of you to pick him before you get a chance to. They won't trade up WITH you. If they think you are going to pick him, but then are wanting to trade, then the simple fact that you're willing to trade shows that you're not all that serious about picking him in the first place.

If we were picking 3rd then yeah, someone might trade up to 1 or 2 to get ahead of us if we're talking up a guy.

i hope cam is the real deal, thats makes having 1st overall pick a nice asset.....

If he is the real deal, it doesn't affect us at all unless they think Denver is going to take him. Otherwise, they can wait for him to fall. He won't be the #1 overall as he is generally considered to only be the #2 or even #3 QB available so why would the #3 overall QB improve the value of the #1 overall pick?

only trades that include a first this year, a first next year and 2nd rounders from both years should be considered. i wouldn't trade out of that spot for anything less.

sounds good, from our perspective but look at it from other team's perspectives. who would be willing to give up 2 first's and 2 seconds for the first overall in what is considered to be a fairly weak draft?

I can't imagine any player in this draft is worth 4 first and second round draft picks.
